As a movie enthusiast with decades of watching and analyzing films under my belt, I find myself deeply moved by George Clooney’s candid conversation with Brad Pitt for GQ magazine. The camaraderie between these two legendary actors is evident, but what truly resonates is their insightful perspective on the ever-evolving Hollywood landscape.
George Clooney, teaming up with his longtime friend Brad Pitt for an exclusive feature in GQ magazine before their upcoming film “Wolfs” hits theaters, openly discussed the current landscape of Hollywood celebrities. During the interview, Clooney good-naturedly retorted to Quentin Tarantino‘s recent remarks suggesting that he may no longer be considered a leading movie star. Notably, Tarantino directed Pitt to an Oscar in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and the two actors previously worked together in the 1996 film “From Dusk Till Dawn.”
Quentin made some comments about me that rubbed me the wrong way, so I’m not exactly feeling friendly towards him at the moment. During an interview, he was listing movie stars and mentioned Brad and another person, then someone asked, “What about George?” To which he replied, “He’s not a movie star.” And then he added something like, “Name me a movie since the millennium.” I found myself thinking, “Since the millennium? That encompasses a significant part of my career.”
“So now I’m like, all right, dude, fuck off. I don’t mind giving him shit,” Clooney added.
EbMaster has reached out to Tarantino’s representative for comment.
In a broader context, Clooney and Pitt pointed out that today’s Hollywood doesn’t produce stars in the same manner as it did during their early careers.
“Clooney noted that Hollywood no longer cultivates stars like it did with the old studio system. ‘Back then, you could work consistently at a studio and make several films according to a plan,’ he explained. ‘Nowadays, I don’t believe that’s as common. Consequently, it’s more challenging to persuade an audience based on a star’s reputation.'”
He also commented, “It’s an excellent period to be a young actor today.” From another viewpoint, when I started out as an actor, the LA Times listed only 64 shows each Monday. Being part of one was a big deal, and you had to aim to be in the top 20 to ensure your show stayed on the air. But that was all there was. The studios produced just five films annually. Now, there are over 600 shows, meaning more opportunities for actors like us.”
George Clooney has been relatively selective with acting roles for some time now, but he’s recently ramping up production with films like “The Tale of the Wolves” and Noah Baumbach’s upcoming Netflix project alongside Adam Sandler and Laura Dern. The Academy Award recipient is surprised to find himself in his 40th year as an actor.
“Clooney recalled discussing this matter with Matt Damon approximately 25 years back, during the time when he debuted and received his Oscar for Best Actor. Clooney commented to him something like, ‘If you manage to maintain a successful career for ten years at that level, it’s like winning a massive jackpot.’ Few can continue beyond that. Thus, I must admit, I’m taken aback by the fact that I’m still working.”
As a seasoned actor with a rich and varied career spanning several decades, I can attest to the truth of George Clooney’s words about the importance of versatility in Hollywood. Throughout my own journey, I have found that the ability to adapt and explore different genres has been crucial in maintaining my relevance and success in the industry.
The film “Wolfs” starring Clooney and Pitt is scheduled for its global debut at the Venice Film Festival, followed by streaming on Apple TV+ starting from September 27. The movie will have a limited theatrical release beginning September 20. To read the actors’ recent cover story in full detail, visit GQ’s official website.
