The fifth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will likely be the last, marking the end of the series focused on Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his adventures aboard the USS Enterprise. Filming wrapped in December 2025, completing production on what many consider to be the most successful Star Trek series on Paramount+.
Currently, two seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are coming to Paramount+. While no official date has been announced, season 4 is expected to premiere around summer 2026, following the typical release schedule for the show. However, season 4 will be the last to feature a full 10 episodes.
The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming to Paramount+ in 2027, with only six episodes. This season will conclude the series by showing Captain Pike passing command of the Starship Enterprise to Captain James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley), paving the way for the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.
Strange New Worlds Ending Is Also The Likely Finale Of Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek Era
As a huge Trek fan, I’ve been following the news about the upcoming seasons closely. It looks like we’ll be getting the second (and final) season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy in early 2027, and then, later that same year, the fifth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. What’s really striking is that Strange New Worlds season five is expected to wrap up not just that show, but likely the entire run of Star Trek overseen by Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout. It feels like the end of an era!
With the cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy after two seasons, Alex Kurtzman and Secret Hideout have completed all of their previously announced Star Trek projects. The only remaining tasks are finishing up post-production on season 2 of Starfleet Academy and season 5 of Strange New Worlds. Currently, Paramount+ has no other Star Trek series in production or planned for the future.
Major changes are on the horizon for Star Trek under Paramount Skydance. Alex Kurtzman’s contract, which started when Star Trek: Discovery was being developed in 2016, is ending this year. It appears Paramount Skydance is planning to take the franchise in a new direction, likely with a different executive producer leading the way.
This clarifies why Paramount+ has been canceling all the Star Trek shows created by Alex Kurtzman – the studio appears to be making room for future projects. It’s possible the next Star Trek TV series won’t be connected to the older shows, similar to how the new Star Trek movie, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daly, is rumored to be a standalone story.
If Paramount Skydance decides to restart the Star Trek TV franchise or launch a completely new series set in a different timeline, the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finale would likely mark the end of the current era of Star Trek shows overseen by Alex Kurtzman, especially if it’s the last episode released on Paramount+.
It’s been nearly two decades since the end of Star Trek: Enterprise, and no single episode has had to wrap up an entire chapter of the franchise since then. There’s also worry that the new Star Trek series, under the leadership of Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, might move away from the hopeful, inclusive future envisioned by Star Trek‘s creator, Gene Roddenberry.
If the upcoming Star Trek significantly changes direction, the finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in 2027 might mark the end of the entire 61-year Star Trek story. That story began with Gene Roddenberry, continued with Rick Berman in the 1990s, and has been carried on by Alex Kurtzman in recent years. It’s a lot riding on Strange New Worlds.
Will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Captain Kirk Spinoff Happen?
At the recent Saturn Awards, Henry Alonso Myers, an executive producer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, revealed to TrekMovie that he and co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman have proposed a spin-off series called Star Trek: Year One to Paramount. This new show would follow Captain Kirk’s initial adventures as commander of the Starship Enterprise, expanding on the world of Strange New Worlds.
I was really excited when I heard about Star Trek: Year One, and it’s clear Paramount was too, judging by the buzz around the franchise. But the sudden cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has definitely thrown a wrench into things. Honestly, it makes me worry that Year One – and any other potential shows set in this current Star Trek timeline – might not happen at all. It’s a real shame, because there was a lot of promise there.
Despite recent changes, Star Trek consistently shows us that anything is possible. Henry Alonso Myers has confirmed the sets used for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds still exist, which leaves the door open for a potential Star Trek: Year One series. Ultimately, whether this happens depends on what Paramount Skydance decides to do with the future of Star Trek on television.
It’s still unlikely we’ll see Star Trek: Year One happen. Most likely, Paramount Skydance will choose a different path for the future of Star Trek. While a series starring Paul Wesley as Kirk and Ethan Peck as Spock would be fun, it would simply revisit the familiar 23rd-century setting that Star Trek has explored many times before.
The season finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will reportedly show Captain Kirk’s very first day working on the USS Enterprise. Joining him and Spock will be Thomas Jane playing Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Ending the series here would be a fitting conclusion, bringing Star Trek back to where it began with Star Trek: The Original Series.
