Middle-earth is coming back to theaters in not one, but two new movies! But both films will have a big hurdle to overcome: living up to the beloved legacy of The Lord of the Rings.
The two new Lord of the Rings projects look promising, offering both fresh stories and familiar faces. However, The Hunt for Gollum and the recently announced Shadow of the Past still face some significant storytelling hurdles.
The Lord Of The Rings Movies Have 2 Major Live-Action Movies Set To Release In The Franchise’s Future
A new movie set in the world of Middle-earth, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is officially in development and scheduled for release in 2027. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Gollum, and will also direct the film. The story will focus on Aragorn’s search for Gollum, taking place between Bilbo’s unexpected departure and the creation of the Fellowship.
Ian McKellen will likely reprise his role as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood is also expected to return as Frodo. Although not shown in the first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn’s pursuit of Gollum was vital in the initial fight against Sauron, assisting Gandalf in learning the truth about the One Ring.
We’ve also discovered another Lord of the Rings project is in the works, called The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. It’s said to be written by Stephen Colbert and his son, and the story takes place 14 years after the events of Return of the King. The plot follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit the path they took with Frodo when they first left The Shire.
I’m so excited to see what happens with Sam’s daughter, Elanor! It looks like she’s going to stumble upon a really old secret – one that could explain just how close the War of the Ring came to being lost right from the start. She’s determined to find out the truth, and I can’t wait to see what she uncovers!
This new story, taking place after Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, appears to be a way to share parts of Tolkien’s original Fellowship of the Ring book that weren’t included in the first film. It will feature characters and storylines like Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, and the Barrow-wights, essentially acting as both a continuation of the trilogy and an addition to the beginning of the story.
Both Upcoming Lord Of The Rings Movies Have To Face The Franchise’s Trickiest Challenge
The new Lord of the Rings movies will be based on the story of The Fellowship of the Ring, but adapting such a beloved film presents a significant challenge. The Fellowship of the Ring is widely considered a fantasy masterpiece, just like The Two Towers and Return of the King, so filmmakers will need to carefully honor its legacy.
According to Tolkien’s writings, almost 17 years go by between Bilbo leaving and the Fellowship being formed in Rivendell. This significant gap in the story offers a lot of exciting possibilities for new on-screen adventures and untold tales.
Working with established and popular stories always carries some risk. These new movies need to stand on their own as good films, but also need to properly acknowledge and celebrate not just The Fellowship of the Ring, but the entire Lord of the Rings saga.
If the new projects can successfully blend familiar elements with fresh ideas, they could really enrich the world of Middle-earth. But achieving that balance will be a significant challenge.
The new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is currently scheduled to come out on December 17, 2027. However, a release date for The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past hasn’t been announced yet.
