The popular cartoon Regular Show is returning in 2026 with a new series called Regular Show: The Lost Tapes. This spinoff appears to be changing some established story details from the original. Although Regular Show ended in 2017, fans will be able to see Mordecai and Rigby again in the new show, almost ten years later.
I was so hyped when Warner Bros. announced they’re bringing back Regular Show with The Lost Tapes! And the best part? They immediately ordered two whole seasons! J.G. Quintel, the original creator, is back as showrunner, which is amazing. It’s set to premiere on Cartoon Network on May 11, 2026, and from what I’ve heard, it could really shake things up and change the show’s story in a big way!
Regular Show: The Lost Tapes Likely Takes Place Before Season 8
The final season of Regular Show took a big turn, moving the action to space and rebranding as Regular Show in Space. This meant abandoning the show’s usual style and storyline. With the death of Pops, things changed drastically. Because of this, The Lost Tapes isn’t a continuation of the original series. I believe it’s actually a prequel or a story set during the characters’ most exciting times.
To restore things to how they were for Mordecai and Rigby, the events of The Lost Tapes need to be integrated back into the main storyline of the park. This means revisiting established facts, which is a challenge similar to what the Cowboy Bebop movie faced – it’s difficult to continue a story that already had a satisfying conclusion.
However, Regular Show is smart enough to handle this situation well. It doesn’t try to trick viewers; it would likely be upfront about bringing back a completed series just to create a spinoff. While that might be unrealistic in Hollywood today, the fact that Quintel is still leading the show is a good sign.
Every Episode Of The Lost Tapes Will Be A Regular Show Retcon By Default
If The Lost Tapes is a prequel set between seasons of the original series, then each episode will essentially rewrite previously established story details. Because it takes place before the season set in space, it will change how we understand that storyline in hindsight.
Honestly, I don’t mind if Regular Show gets a little weird! It’s not like Star Wars or Marvel, where everything has to fit perfectly into a huge, established story. The writers should just have fun with it, and as long as it’s hilarious, I’m happy! It doesn’t need to make total sense, you know?
Regular Show Is Too Smart Of A Show Not To Be Self-Aware
It feels strange for a popular cartoon to return with a new name and rewrite its own story. But Regular Show has always been clever, unpredictable, and aware of these kinds of tricks. Instead of quietly changing the past and hoping fans don’t notice, it will likely highlight those changes, and the revival itself.
The title, The Lost Tapes, hints that the new episodes will feel like rediscovered, previously unseen parts of the original series. It’s possible Mordecai and Rigby will introduce each episode, explaining how it connects to the show’s established story – or even changes it. This revival gives Regular Show a chance to be clever and self-aware.
In the final season of Regular Show, the creators playfully criticized the way streaming services have changed television. Known for cleverly turning popular trends on their head, they’re expected to address the fact that this new show is itself a continuation of a successful franchise – a way to keep making money from a familiar brand. True to the spirit of Regular Show, they’ll likely include some knowing, self-deprecating jokes to acknowledge this.
