The Oscars are leaving their longtime home at the Dolby Theatre. Starting in 2029, the annual ceremony will be held at the Peacock Theater within the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles, as announced by the Academy on Thursday. This move is part of a ten-year deal that lasts until 2039. Also in 2029, the Oscars will stop broadcasting on traditional television and move exclusively to YouTube. These changes will first be seen at the 101st Academy Awards, and some speculate they represent a shift away from the event’s traditionally glamorous image.
Throughout their almost 100-year history, the Academy Awards haven’t always been held in the same place. The ceremony has moved around to different locations in Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, and Santa Monica. Before settling into the Dolby Theatre in 2002, the Oscars were hosted at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Shrine Auditorium in Downtown L.A. Now, at L.A. Live, the ceremony will be near the popular Crypto.com Arena.
