YouTube frustrates viewers by bombarding them with captcha puzzles before videos

Many YouTube viewers are frustrated by the large number of captchas they’re being asked to complete just to watch videos.

The internet can be frustrating sometimes, with things like spam, advertisements, and those annoying ‘captcha’ challenges constantly popping up.

YouTube definitely has some drawbacks, like lengthy ads and a growing amount of low-quality, AI-generated content. However, captchas weren’t really a concern until very recently.

Starting on March 25th, many social media users found they had to complete puzzles before they could watch videos, which caused a lot of frustration.

YouTuber users forced to solve captchas to watch videos

I always find it a little frustrating when a website makes me type out those distorted letters and numbers to prove I’m not a robot. It feels so old-school! These days, I’m much more used to just clicking on pictures – you know, selecting all the buses or traffic lights. It’s way easier than trying to decipher those character puzzles!

One user said they were unable to watch videos or even access the YouTube homepage without first completing a CAPTCHA.

Numerous people started reporting the same issue, even though they hadn’t encountered it previously, which meant the problem wasn’t with their own internet connections.

It’s unclear what’s causing these captcha prompts to appear. Users who are seeing them haven’t been able to identify a common reason.

A user in Germany reported that even without using a VPN, they were still required to complete captchas.

One user found a temporary fix by switching to Google’s Public DNS, but the problem came back. Ad blockers, which are frequently suspected in these situations, don’t appear to be the cause – at least one person still saw the captchas even after turning their ad blocker off.

This problem arises after YouTube started showing even longer, non-skippable ads. At the same time, health experts are raising alarms about misleading “educational” videos created by AI that spread harmful information.
