A new app using artificial intelligence is now available for free in Japan, designed to help parents understand what their babies are trying to tell them with their cries. The city offering the app hopes it will reduce some of the challenges of having a new baby.
Okay, so I checked out this Awababy app, and basically it tries to figure out why my baby is crying. It uses AI – though honestly, 150,000 crying samples feels kinda small to train it properly – and it listens to the cry, looking at things like how high or low it is, the overall sound, and how long it lasts. It then tries to guess what’s up based on that.
After hearing the baby cry, the device will identify what the baby needs or how it’s feeling, choosing from 11 different possibilities.
Babies cry when they’re hungry, tired, uncomfortable, lonely, too hot or cold, have a tummy ache, or simply want some attention. This new app aims to help parents better understand what their baby is trying to communicate through crying.
New app lets parents understand crying babies
Starting April 20, 2026, Mishima City in Shizuoka Prefecture will make the Awa Baby Premium smartphone app available to residents, according to Livedoor.
This service usually costs money, but the city will pay for it for families with children age two or younger. This is being done to help families and ease worries about childcare.

Parents involved in a recent test found that even a basic understanding of what their baby needed helped them react more calmly, instead of constantly wondering what was wrong.
The app lets users record and share what helped calm their baby’s crying, creating a helpful collection of solutions for others to use.
Mishima City is investing about ¥1 million in a new program to support parents and help tackle Japan’s falling birth rate.
