However, in the United States, the book was published as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone because publishers thought ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’ would be easier for young readers to grasp.
According to Philip W. Errington’s biography of J.K. Rowling, the idea came from Arthur A. Levine, who previously led Scholastic and secured the US publishing deal for the Harry Potter series.
Levine felt the book’s title needed to more clearly signal its magical nature to American audiences. According to Errington, Levine admitted while he didn’t object to the original title, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he understood why it might come across as too mysterious or old-fashioned.
I initially suggested the title ‘Harry Potter and the School of Magic,’ and I ran it by Jo. She thoughtfully pointed out that it didn’t quite feel right. After discussing it further, we finally settled on ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,’ and the rest is well-known history.
