Wow, Outlander has truly been an incredible ride! I mean, it’s way more than just a story – over eight seasons and a spin-off, plus all the Diana Gabaldon books it’s based on, this show has taken us everywhere. We’ve traveled across continents, oceans, and even centuries, all because of this amazing love story. It all started with Claire, a WWII nurse who accidentally travels back in time to 1743 and meets Jamie, the love of her life. Since then, it’s become this huge, epic adventure that’s taken us from Scotland to the American colonies and all over the 18th and 20th centuries! And now, with the spin-off Blood of My Blood set in 2025, they’re even exploring Claire and Jamie’s parents’ story, making the whole saga even bigger and more romantic.
The world of Outlander is incredibly immersive, demanding a lot from viewers both emotionally and in terms of keeping track of its complex storyline. With so many different time periods, locations, and dramatic events – love, loss, passion, and war – it’s easy to get lost. As the series comes to an end, let’s revisit Claire and Jamie Fraser’s journey in order, remembering all the places and times we’ve traveled to – and, let’s be real, how captivating the romance has been along the way. That’s what really matters!
Blood of My Blood, season one
1714–1715
Scotland
The story begins with the death of Red Jacob, the leader of the MacKenzie clan, which creates chaos as his sons, Colum and Dougal, compete for power. Their struggle is complicated by Dougal’s involvement in a past rebellion, intensifying their rivalry. They attempt to use their sister, Ellen, as a bargaining chip by arranging her marriage to Malcolm Grant, but she’s secretly in love with Brian Fraser, an illegitimate son of Lord Lovat. On the day of her wedding, Ellen and Brian escape together, and in the process, Brian ends up killing Malcolm – though he claims it was in self-defense.
Time travel is definitely possible! Henry and Julia Beauchamp experience it firsthand when they’re mysteriously separated in time after falling through standing stones in 1923. Julia finds herself working as a servant at the unpleasant Castle Leathers, home to Lord Lovat. She cleverly uses his unwanted advances to her advantage, pretending he’s the father of her child, and he forces her into marriage when her son, secretly named William, is born. Eventually, Julia discovers Henry is working for the Grant family, and the two are reunited at Castle Leoch. They scheme to return to their own time, but a big question remains: can their son, William, also travel through time? It’s a mystery! [Discover Henry and Julia’s lives before they’re thrown into the past in 1923.]
Get ready for some romance! This story features Henry and Julia’s sweet journey to find each other, as well as the instant connection and courageous love story of Brian and Ellen. It’s a time for heartfelt moments and falling in love!
season seven
1739
Scotland
Okay, so things get wild here. Roger and Buck end up unexpectedly in the past while trying to find Jemmy, who’s been snatched away in 1980. It’s a total shock, but Roger actually meets Jamie’s parents, Brian and Jenny, and witnesses a very intense moment between Geillis Duncan and Dougal MacKenzie. But the biggest twist? He runs into his own dad, Jerry! I thought he died in WWII, but apparently, he also traveled through the stones! Thankfully, it’s not all drama – Bree, Jemmy, and Mandy eventually arrive, and it’s amazing to see them all reunited.
Does time travel exist in the world of Outlander? The show suggests the stones don’t just send people randomly, but to where they need to be. We see this with Roger, who ends up rescuing his father from a difficult situation during the war, while also thinking about his son, Jem. This also hints at why Roger traveled through the stones initially – a mystery that’s explored by visiting 1980.
Does this show have romance? Yes, especially with Brian Fraser – he’s quite charming. If you’re looking for a deeply emotional experience, check out the conversation between him and Bree (who he believes is just a stranger), where he opens up about still grieving for his wife, Ellen.
season one
1743–1744
Scotland
The story begins with Claire Randall traveling through time via the stones at Inverness. After narrowly escaping the dangerous Black Jack Randall, she joins a group of Highlanders and finds herself at Castle Leoch and Lallybroch. There, she falls in love with and marries Jamie Fraser, and they share a passionate relationship. Throughout this time, we learn about the historical Jacobite uprising. Claire and Murtagh playfully introduce modern music to the 18th century, and Claire faces danger when she’s accused of witchcraft. She discovers that Geillis Duncan is also a time traveler, and eventually reveals her own origins to Jamie. The story culminates in Claire rescuing Jamie from Black Jack Randall while he’s imprisoned at Wentworth Prison.
Time travel is definitely possible! And it’s had a significant impact on us, both positive and negative. Think about traveling back to where Claire began her journey in 1945.
Let’s talk about the romance! We’re talking about Claire and Jamie’s marriage, and, well, their incredibly passionate relationship. Remember when Jamie confessed he loved Claire from the very beginning, and that iconic line about his heart being torn out? Yes, it’s definitely a very romantic and passionate story!
season two
1744
Paris, France
Following Jamie’s recovery from his attack, Claire becomes pregnant, and Murtagh is shocked when Jamie and Claire reveal their story of time travel. In Paris, Claire encounters the enigmatic apothecary, Master Raymond, who nicknames her ‘La Dame Blanche,’ and Jamie befriends a young pickpocket named Fergus. Claire also discovers connections to Frank’s family history. Jamie vows not to seek revenge on Black Jack Randall, but when he discovers Randall assaulting Fergus, he challenges him to a duel, despite Claire’s fears that killing Randall will erase Frank from existence. The resulting stress causes Claire to go into premature labor, and tragically, their baby, Faith, is stillborn. After recovering physically, Claire uses a desperate measure – she sleeps with King Louis XV – to secure Jamie’s release from prison. All in all, their time in Paris was deeply difficult.
➼ Is there time travel?: No, just good old-fashioned drama from one’s own timeline.
➼ Is there romance?: Everyone is broken here; stay away.
seasons two and three
1744–1756
Scotland
Before the Battle of Culloden, Jamie and Claire deal with the unpleasant Lord Lovat, and they meet a young Lord John Grey who is spying for the English. Jamie spares his life, creating a future obligation. Claire helps Colum MacKenzie pass away peacefully, and she and Jamie kill Dougal after he discovers their failed plot to assassinate Charles Stuart. Knowing he’s likely to die, Jamie sends Claire back through the stones to Frank at Craigh na Dun for her safety. The battle itself is as awful as Claire predicted, but Jamie manages to kill Black Jack Randall. After Culloden, Jamie goes into hiding, Fergus loses a hand, Jamie has a heartbreaking encounter with the widow Mary MacNab, and ultimately surrenders to the British to protect Jenny and her family.
Does time travel exist in this story? It’s a bittersweet moment! Jamie knows Claire, who is pregnant, needs to escape back to her own time. He brings her to Craigh na Dun, they share a final, intimate moment—a traditional ritual—and he helps her touch the stone, sending her away. [This means Claire ends up in 1948, and the story suggests you, as the reader, could experience time travel too.]
Does the show have a romantic side? Definitely during the earlier seasons, before the Battle of Culloden. Things get much darker after that. And who could forget that ridiculously long wig Sam Heughan had to wear?
season three
1756–1764
England
During the Helwater years, Jamie develops a close relationship with Lord John, who secured his release on the Dunsany estate. There, Lord Dunsany’s daughter, Geneva, manipulates Jamie into a sexual encounter, resulting in their son, William. After Geneva and her husband, Lord Ellesmere, pass away, Jamie asks Lord John (and Geneva’s sister, Isobel) to care for Willie. Jamie eventually leaves Helwater when Willie is about six years old.
➼ Is there time travel?: Zero.
➼ Is there romance?: Never stick a sad Scot in England; it only makes things worse.
season three
1766
Edinburgh and the Highlands, Scotland
➼ What happens?: CLAIRE COMES BACK!!
So, does time travel exist? Absolutely! Claire literally returns, which is the biggest example of time travel imaginable! You can even revisit the moment by jumping back to 1968 and experiencing it again and again.
Claire and Jamie’s reunion after two decades is incredibly sweet – and includes a bit of action, with Claire even having to defend herself! It’s safe to say their love story is still going strong.
season three
1767
The Atlantic Ocean and the Island of Hispaniola
When Jamie’s nephew, Young Ian, is kidnapped and taken on a ship headed for Jamaica, Jamie and Claire give chase aboard the Artemis. Fergus stows away with them, bringing his secretly betrothed wife, Marsali (Laoghaire’s eldest daughter). Jamie receives acupuncture treatment, while Claire is forced onto another ship, the Porpoise, to help sick sailors. Discovering the captain intends to arrest Jamie, she escapes by jumping overboard and finds herself stranded on Hispaniola. She survives thanks to the strange but helpful Father Fogden. Meanwhile, Fergus and Marsali officially marry, and Jamie adopts Fergus’s surname. Claire also bravely argues for intimacy despite having a high fever.
➼ Is there time travel?: Isn’t all this drama at sea enough?
Despite a lot of grim events, there’s a surprisingly sweet romance! The moment Jamie and Claire find each other again on the beach is incredibly romantic.
season three
1767
Jamaica
Claire and Geillis have a final confrontation, culminating in Claire killing Geillis – a satisfying and just end. Meanwhile, Lord John, now governing Jamaica, successfully cancels the recent reward offered for Jamie’s capture.
➼ Is there time travel?: Geillis almost makes it through that newly discovered tide-pool portal.
While rescuing Young Ian takes center stage, there isn’t much focus on romance between Jamie and Claire. However, it’s amusing to see Claire a little jealous of the connection between Jamie and Lord John.
season three
1767
Georgia, the American Colonies
This moment marks Claire and Jamie’s arrival in the American Colonies, though it’s a rather rough start – they essentially wash ashore after a shipwreck! It’s a small event in the grand scheme of things, but it’s their initial introduction to this new land.
➼ Is there time travel?: Travel by hurricane only!
Let’s be real – the idea that someone truly loves you can only be proven if they risk everything, like diving into a hurricane-ravaged ocean to save your life. That’s one way to look at it, anyway.
season four
1767–1770
North Carolina, the American Colonies
The Frasers really make their mark when they arrive in the Colonies, especially when Ian finds and adopts Rollo, an incredible wolf dog! Things aren’t easy, though – they’re attacked and robbed by Stephen Bonnet, a dangerous man Jamie had previously helped. Jamie reconnects with his Aunt Jocasta at River Run and receives a generous land grant of 10,000 acres from the king in the North Carolina backcountry, which they call Fraser’s Ridge and begin to develop as their new home. Claire encounters Adawehi, a Cherokee healer, who has a prophetic dream about Claire possessing magical abilities. And in a moment that thrilled many fans, Jamie unexpectedly finds Murtagh, who is still alive!
Yes, time travel definitely happens in this story! Bree travels from the future through the stones at Inverness and ends up warning her parents about a fire that will kill them in the 1770s. Roger follows her, and they meet in Wilmington, quickly falling in love and having a handfasting ceremony. However, they immediately have a major argument and separate. Tragically, Bree is assaulted by Stephen Bonnet, and later runs into Jamie. Everyone is deeply affected by this event. Bree discovers she’s pregnant and shares everything with her parents. A terrible misunderstanding, caused by Lizzie Wemyss, leads Jamie to believe Roger was the attacker, and he nearly assaults him. Things get even worse when Ian sells a wounded Roger to the Mohawk. It makes you wonder why anyone would risk time travel in the first place—a trip to 1971 might offer some answers.
The romance between Claire and Jamie is a definite highlight! Seeing them together, especially looking out over Fraser’s Ridge, is always heartwarming. And who could forget Jamie carrying Claire out of the bath – it was such a sweet and romantic moment.
season four
1770
New York, the American Colonies
Claire, Jamie, and Young Ian head to New York to search for Roger. Meanwhile, Murtagh escorts the pregnant Bree to River Run, where she becomes friends with Lord John. Claire discovers the existence of another time traveler, known as Otter Tooth. In a surprising turn of events, Ian offers himself in exchange for Roger and chooses to live among the Mohawk people. Jamie allows Roger to physically assault him, seemingly as a way to resolve some underlying tension – and it’s portrayed as intensely passionate (from Jamie’s perspective).
➼ Is there time travel?: No, but Roger does find another stone circle out in the woods.
There’s no romance in this story. The characters are all dealing with intense feelings of grief, anger, and guilt.
seasons four and five
1770–1773
North Carolina, the American Colonies
Lots happens! Bree gives birth to her baby at River Run, and surprisingly, Roger accepts that the baby might be Bonnet’s. They get married despite Jamie’s constant disapproval of Roger – which, let’s be honest, is one of the many reasons we love Jamie, even when he’s a murderer! Jamie pretends to hunt rebels (the Regulators) while secretly protecting Murtagh, who turns out to be their leader. Claire trains Marsali as a surgical assistant and even manages to create penicillin! Sadly, Murtagh dies in Jamie’s arms during the Battle of Alamance. Roger goes through a terrifying ordeal, being hanged by an ancestor but somehow surviving. Bree finally gets her revenge and kills Bonnet. They discover Jeremiah has the ability to travel through time and is actually Roger’s son. Ian makes a welcome return! The Frasers face trouble from the Committee of Safety, led by the Brown brothers, who particularly hate Claire and her modern medical practices. Lionel Brown kidnaps and assaults Claire, but Jamie and his men rescue her and bring Lionel back for questioning. Marsali, taking matters into her own hands, poisons Lionel with water hemlock – proving she’s a force to be reckoned with.
While actual time travel isn’t happening, a character named Claire does encounter someone from the past – Wendigo Donner – and she doesn’t like him at all.
Yes, there’s still romance despite the difficult times ahead for the Frasers. A standout moment is Murtagh’s heartfelt confession to Jocasta before her wedding – telling her he loves her, even knowing it means she can’t marry him, and then tragically dying. It’s a scene that still resonates with viewers years later. And true to the show’s pattern, tragedy leads to more romance, with Jamie delivering a powerfully moving line: “If my last words aren’t ‘I love you,’ know it was only because I didn’t have time.”
seasons six and seven
1773–1776
North Carolina, the American Colonies
Things get incredibly difficult for Claire when Tom Christie and his family, with a lot of hidden and disturbing secrets, arrive at Fraser’s Ridge. Claire is wrongly accused of murdering Malva and her baby, and is arrested and faces execution. Jamie tries to rescue her, but it’s Tom who surprisingly confesses to the crime to save Claire, and is later forgiven. Claire later discovers that Malva’s brother, Allan, was the real killer, and Ian kills him in revenge. Meanwhile, Claire starts making and secretly using ether. A man named Wendigo Donner arrives looking for gems and accidentally causes an explosion, destroying their home – a loss that turns out to be positive, as it proves a previously found obituary was wrong. Ian also kills a woman named Mrs. Bug over a dispute involving hidden gold, leading to a threat of revenge. Finally, Jamie is forced to join the army and is sent to Fort Ticonderoga.
The story explores the possibility of time travel. Bree gives birth to her daughter, Mandy, but Mandy is diagnosed with a serious heart problem that requires treatment only available in the past. This forces Bree and her family to travel back in time – specifically to 1978 – in a poignant attempt to save Mandy’s life.
While Claire and Jamie face heavier challenges now, making their romance less outwardly passionate than before, there’s still a deeply moving moment when they discuss the possibility of Claire returning to the future. Claire dramatically throws a gem Jamie offered her out the window, making it clear she’ll never leave him. Jamie’s visible relief and admission that he couldn’t live without her are incredibly touching—it’s a testament to their enduring love and why many fans remain devoted to the show.
season seven
1776
Great Dismal Swamp, the American Colonies
William is given a secret mission by Captain Richardson, leading him into the dangerous Great Dismal Swamp along the North Carolina-Virginia border. He quickly gets lost and badly hurt until Ian, who’s working with local Native American tribes, finds him. Ian takes William to the home of Denzell and Rachel Hunter, a brother and sister who are Quakers, and they nurse him back to health, saving his life and treating a severe infection in his arm.
➼ Is there time travel?: Just travel by horse.
Let me tell you, don’t go into this expecting a love story! I mean, yeah, Ian and Rachel have a little something going on with some glances, but honestly, there’s way more focus on… well, a pretty gross arm wound. It’s definitely not a romantic watch!
Season Seven
1777
New York, the American Colonies
Here’s what happens: Jamie attempts to warn everyone about the impending attack on Fort Ticonderoga, but his warnings are ignored—possibly because of his good looks. Meanwhile, Claire is captured by the British and unexpectedly comes face-to-face with the grown-up William. Ian repays a life debt to William, but their friendship is severely strained as a result. Claire and Denzell Hunter bond over their shared medical work, despite the gruesome conditions. Jamie enlists with Daniel Morgan’s Rifle Corps and participates in the Battle of Saratoga. Claire tries unsuccessfully to dissuade Benedict Arnold from betraying the American cause. Witnessing a close friend die in battle deeply affects William, making him question the war. Jamie’s cousin, Simon Fraser, dies at Saratoga, and Jamie and Claire are tasked with returning his body to Scotland, fulfilling a promise Jamie made to Jenny to bring Young Ian back at some point.
➼ Is there time travel?: Just travel by legs.
While this part of Outlander is full of intense emotions and conversations, and everyone feels like they could be in danger, it doesn’t really deliver on the romance I was hoping for.
season seven
1777–1778
Scotland
Laoghaire insults Claire with a harsh accusation. Claire reveals to Jenny and Ian Murray that she’s traveled from the future, which they surprisingly accept. Lord John urgently requests Claire’s help to treat his wounded nephew, prompting her to return to the colonies. Jamie arranges for Joanie to enter a convent and permanently ends his relationship with Laoghaire. Claire and Young Ian depart, understanding they won’t see Ian Murray again, and he later passes away peacefully with Jamie and Jenny by his side. True to form, Laoghaire likely continues to verbally attack Claire.
➼ Is there time travel?: No, but Jamie and Claire (and Young Ian) do cross an ocean.
It’s good to see Lallybroch’s Laird and Lady together again, but Ian’s heartbreaking illness casts a shadow over everything. Seriously, it’s incredibly upsetting!
season seven
1778
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the American Colonies
A lot happens! Claire and Denny perform surgery on Lord John’s nephew. Claire briefly acts as a spy for the Americans. Rachel and Ian are targeted by Arch Bug, but William saves them. Claire and Lord John receive devastating news that Jamie’s ship sank, and he’s presumed dead, leaving them heartbroken. To protect Claire from arrest for spying, Lord John proposes marriage, and she reluctantly accepts. They share a night of despair, leading to a sexual encounter. Claire discovers Ezekiel Richardson is also a spy. Unexpectedly, Jamie was on a different ship and is alive! Lord John reveals he and Jamie both had a relationship with Claire, enraging Jamie, who nearly attacks him before turning him over to the Americans. Jamie and Claire have sex on Lord John’s table, seemingly unconcerned with his feelings. William, overhearing the truth about his parentage, struggles with his identity and seeks solace with a sex worker named Jane. Rachel and Ian get married. Jane kills a British officer who attempts to harm her sister, Frances. Captain Richardson attempts to have William captured by Hessian soldiers, but John and Ian rescue him. Claire receives a steady supply of cheese from the Marquis de Lafayette. Life in Philadelphia is chaotic and eventful.
➼ Is there time travel?: Nope.
Despite Jamie returning from the dead, there’s no romance to be found. He’s behaving terribly, and frankly, I’m furious with him – especially considering his past actions, including murder.
season seven
1778
Monmouth, New Jersey, the American Colonies
James Fraser commands his troops at the Battle of Monmouth, where Claire is wounded and rescued by Denny. When General Lee insists Jamie return to duty and leave Claire, Jamie dramatically resigns by writing his resignation in blood – seemingly unaware Jamie’s loyalty lies solely with his wife! Lord John checks on Claire, and she expresses her gratitude for his help. However, Jamie still refuses to apologize! William asks Jamie to help him free his sister, Jane, from jail, but they arrive to find she’s attempted suicide. He then asks Jamie and Claire to care for Jane’s sister, Frances, but makes it clear he will never consider Jamie a father, which is confusing. Claire discovers that Fanny and Jane’s mother was named Faith, and she taught them the same song Claire sang to her own baby, Faith, before she was taken. This leads Claire to wonder if Faith actually died in Paris, and if Fanny’s mother could be her lost daughter – a shocking possibility!
The show hints at time travel through Claire’s dreams or hallucinations, where she seemingly interacts with Master Raymond, who asks for her forgiveness – a moment that feels like a visit from the past.
One of the most romantic moments in Outlander happens when Jamie immediately rushes to support Claire while she’s dealing with an injury – even while she’s using the bathroom. It’s a truly sweet and devoted act!
season eight
1779
Savannah, Georgia, the American Colonies
Claire takes matters into her own hands and kills the man she believes was responsible for her daughter Faith’s death and the kidnapping of Jane and Fanny. She’s convinced Faith is still alive, despite having very little proof. Meanwhile, Lord John learns his nephew Ben has died, and is surprised to find Ben’s widow, Amaranthus, and their baby, Trevor, now living with him. William, Lord John’s son, is skeptical of the situation, but he’s easily charmed by Amaranthus and promises to take care of her and the baby.
➼ Is there time travel? No.
➼ Is there romance? Only stabbings, sadness, and suspicious baby mamas here.
season eight
1779
North Carolina, the American Colonies
Claire and Jamie bring Fanny back to Fraser’s Ridge and find that Ian and a very pregnant Rachel have rallied the community to build them a new house. Jamie also encounters Charles Cunningham, a former British soldier who seems to have gained considerable power among the settlers, and Jamie doesn’t trust him.
Yes, time travel is happening! Bree, Roger, Jemmy, and Mandy have returned from a trip to 1739, bringing back books from 1980 with them – including classics like Goodnight Moon and The Lord of the Rings, as well as a book about Scottish history written by Frank. This creates a complicated situation for Jamie, who learns that Frank looked just like his enemy, Black Jack Randall. Even more unsettling, Frank’s writing reveals that Jamie is destined to die in battle within a year. Jamie is essentially being warned about his future. [If you need a reminder of what happened that caused the MacKenzies to travel back in time, revisit the events of 1739.]
Is there a romantic element? Absolutely! It’s basically me falling head over heels for Jamie Fraser… if he were to say “Frodo Baggins.” I never imagined I could find that so appealing.
Blood of My Blood, season one
1917–1920
Belgium and England
Henry Beauchamp, a soldier fighting in World War I, writes a heartbreaking letter about the realities of war and his fading hope. The letter reaches Julia Moriston, who works at the War Office in London. Hoping to brighten his spirits, Julia responds, and a connection blossoms through their letters. They share their lives and feelings, and Julia even tells Henry about her love for the Scottish Highlands. Eventually, they fall in love, marry, and have a daughter named Claire. Despite the darkness of war, they manage to build a happy life together.
➼ Is there time travel?: Not yet.
➼ Is there romance?: Falling in love over letters?! These two are boiling over with romance.
Blood of My Blood, season one
1923
Scotland
Things take a dramatic turn when Julia and Henry’s relaxing Scottish getaway goes horribly wrong. After leaving their daughter, Claire, with Uncle Lamb, they travel to Edinburgh and Inverness, only to find themselves in a series of unfortunate events: a passionate encounter, a car accident, and being swept away by a river. Ultimately, they unexpectedly end up near the mysterious Craigh na Dun.
Time travel is definitely possible in this story. Julia climbs a hill with stone circles to get her bearings, but suddenly vanishes with a shout. Henry, hearing her, rushes to the stones and, without hesitation, follows her—traveling back to 1714 to discover what happened to the Beauchamps.
It’s obvious these two characters are deeply in love, even though their time together is brief.
seasons one and two
1940–1945
France, England, and Scotland
The story shows flashbacks of Claire and Frank’s time during the war, including Claire leaving Frank to serve as a nurse, her experiences with American paratroopers after D-Day, and celebrations on VE Day. In 1945, they finally have a honeymoon in Inverness, Scotland, where Claire enthusiastically learns about Scottish history and the Battle of Culloden thanks to Frank’s expertise – and she’s very grateful for it.
So, does time travel exist? Absolutely! Claire visits the ancient Craigh na Dun stones hoping to find some flowers, and when she touches one of the stones, she’s unexpectedly transported back in time to 1743. That’s where her – and our – real adventure begins.
There’s a hint of romance, but it’s not a major focus. I sympathize with Frank, and the historian’s boldness is definitely intriguing, but it doesn’t feel like a sweeping love story.
season two
1948
Scotland
Claire goes back to the 1940s and shares with Frank that she’s been with Jamie and is expecting a baby. While he’s upset by the news, Frank is willing to attempt to reconcile and move forward.
The story begins in 1746 with Jamie leading Claire to the Craigh na Dun stones, after which she unexpectedly travels back to the 20th century. The transition is difficult for her.
As a fan, it breaks my heart to say it, but there’s absolutely no romance happening here. Frank still clearly has feelings for Claire and is crushed by what he’s learned, but honestly, she seems completely emotionally drained. It’s just…sad. No sparks, no connection – just a lot of pain. Romance is definitely off the table.
season three
1948–1966
Boston, Massachusetts
Claire and Frank’s marriage doesn’t recover, as Claire remains in love with Jamie. However, Frank deeply loves their daughter, Brianna, who is born after they relocate to Boston. Claire attends medical school and becomes friends with Joe Abernathy. After Brianna turns eighteen, Frank requests a divorce and plans to return to England with her. Claire challenges him to follow through, but tragically, he dies in a car accident shortly after.
➼ Is there time travel?: This is Claire’s time-travel desert.
Yes, there’s definitely romance! Claire holding onto her feelings for Jamie for two decades is incredibly romantic, despite the difficulties in her marriage to Frank.
seasons two and three
1968
Scotland
Claire and Bree travel to Inverness after Reverend Wakefield’s death to offer condolences to his son, Roger. Being back in Scotland stirs up difficult memories for Claire, and eventually, she reveals the truth about her time travel and Brianna’s parentage. Unexpectedly, they encounter Geillis Duncan (then known as Gillian Edgars) while she’s involved in the Scottish independence movement, and witness her travel through the stones at Craigh na Dun, landing her in the 1730s. The trio then begin researching Jamie’s fate after the Battle of Culloden, discovering he survived, though details remain scarce. Amidst all the upheaval, Bree and Roger share a romantic moment.
Geillis, determined to help Bonnie Prince Charlie become king, commits murder as part of a ritual and then uses the stones to travel through time. She’s a fascinating, but dangerous, time traveler.
It’s obvious Roger has strong feelings for Brianna, but I’m not entirely convinced their connection is romantic just yet.
season three
1968
Boston, Massachusetts
Roger believes Jamie is still alive and hopes to be with Bree, so he travels to Boston around Christmas with surprising news for Claire. He’s discovered an old pamphlet from 1765, printed in Edinburgh, that contains lines from a poem by Robert Burns – a poem Claire specifically said she’d quote to Jamie. Since Robert Burns was just a child in 1756, Roger is convinced the pamphlet proves it’s Jamie. Claire realizes that if she travels through the stones now, it would be 1766 (based on the 202-year time difference, though time travel in Outlander isn’t always consistent), and she decides to take the chance.
The story begins with Claire preparing for a journey back in time. She gathers modern medicine like penicillin – an impossible feat for the 1760s! – and even creates a historically accurate, yet advanced, dress. After a heartfelt goodbye to her daughter Bree, she travels through the ancient stones at Inverness, hoping to reunite with her husband in 1766. Come along with her on this incredible adventure!
➼ Is there romance?: There is the hope of romance, which is almost as good.
season four
1970
North Carolina
Roger and Bree attend a Scottish festival in North Carolina, but things get awkward when Roger criticizes Bree for wanting a sexual relationship without immediately committing to marriage. Also, Bree gives Roger a book about Scottish settlers in America that later proves to be significant.
Time travel would be amazing! I’ve never wished for it more than when watching Roger attempt to portray his all-or-nothing approach to love as something romantic.
➼ Is there romance?: Read the room!! (The room is the rest of this blurb.)
season four
1971
England and Scotland
Roger learns about Fraser’s Ridge from a book Bree gave him, and confirms Claire successfully returned to Jamie. He then discovers a troubling newspaper clipping, thanks to Fiona, a housekeeper, and papers saved by her grandmother. The clipping reports the death of James Fraser and his wife in a fire on Fraser’s Ridge sometime in the 1770s, though the date is unclear. When Roger tries to warn Bree in Boston, he learns she’s already traveled to Scotland, claiming to be visiting her mother. He realizes she must have already seen the obituary and followed it to the past, so he does the same.
In the story, Bree travels back in time to 1945 with supplies to try and save her mother’s life. Later, Roger follows, journeying to 1769 dressed in historical clothing. Readers are invited to imagine joining them on these time-traveling adventures.
Does this story have romance? Absolutely. Roger immediately pursues Brianna, which is either incredibly romantic or incredibly foolish – it’s one or the other!
season seven
1978–1980
Scotland
Okay, so things get pretty wild for the MacKenzies! They travel through the stones and end up in Scotland, where they stumble upon a treasure trove of letters from Claire and Jamie. Huge relief, they also find out Lallybroch is up for sale! But then things quickly go downhill. Bree lands a job at the hydroelectric plant, and honestly, she faces so much sexism from her colleagues – this guy, Rob Cameron, is the worst. Surprisingly, he eventually becomes friendly with Bree and Roger, and then he reads some of Roger’s research about time travel. That’s when he figures out Jemmy knows where the Jacobite gold is hidden. He kidnaps Jemmy, and Bree and Roger are convinced he’s taken him back through the stones! Roger jumps after him, and then Rob shows up at Lallybroch, revealing the whole thing was a scheme to get rid of Roger so he could manipulate Bree into taking him and Jemmy to America to find the gold. Thankfully, Bree and the kids manage to escape him. Now, she’s determined to find Roger, who’s searching for Jemmy in the past, and bring them both home.
So, does time travel exist in the story? Absolutely, and in both directions! We see Roger’s ancestor, Buck MacKenzie (and the man who executed him!), unexpectedly appear from the past. Buck traveled from 1778 to 1980 after experiencing the strange buzzing at Craigh na Dun. Surprisingly, he quickly becomes part of the family. He even joins Roger when Roger travels through the stones to find Rob and Jemmy! It’s a thrilling family adventure through time, and a clever twist when their journey doesn’t go quite as planned, landing them in 1739 with a different mission. That’s where they discover the real reason for their trip!
There’s a hint of romance, though it’s subtle. The sex scene between Bree and Roger, set to Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight,” is definitely noteworthy, and Roger’s dramatic declaration about rescuing their son adds to the potential for something more.
Be sure to check back at season’s end to see where and when our Outlander journey ends.
