As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that James Gunn‘s approach to filmmaking is nothing short of refreshing. His dedication to meticulous preparation and his knack for hiring the right talent have set him apart in the world of comic book adaptations. It’s a breath of fresh air to see such a director who seems to have a firm grasp on his vision from the get-go, minimizing the need for reshoots that have become all too common in Hollywood.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I completed filming for “Superman” at the tail end of July, but let me assure you, there’s still a mountain of work ahead on this highly anticipated comic book blockbuster set to hit screens in 2025. In a recent interaction with fans on Threads, I shared that I’m far from wrapping up the film that will launch my innovative new DC Universe.
Absolutely not! After filming is complete, there’s still plenty more work ahead – editing, visual effects, sound design, and scoring are all yet to come! (This was written in a message on Threads.)
When someone proposed that reshoots would also take up a considerable amount of time, as they are common in large Hollywood blockbusters, Gunn unexpectedly disclosed: “I’m not sure. I’ve only done one day of reshoots for both my previous films altogether.”
Given that Gunn’s recent films, such as “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (2023) for Marvel and “The Suicide Squad” (2021) for DC, are significant comic book adaptations, it’s quite remarkable that he managed to finalize both projects without extensive reshoots. Intrigued by this, one fan asked about his secret, to which Gunn shared six pieces of advice.
1) “Gunn suggested over-preparation.”
In his third suggestion, Gunn emphasized that the casting process in his movies is often extensive, aiming to discover the perfect fit for each role. Additionally, he conducts thorough background investigations and speaks with individuals they’ve collaborated with previously.
In the search for Superman, Gunn discovered his ideal Man of Steel in David Corenswet. The 31-year-old actor gained recognition primarily through his supporting roles in two Netflix series created by Ryan Murphy, namely “The Politician” and “Hollywood.” Additionally, Corenswet featured in the horror film “Pearl,” directed by Ti West, with Mia Goth taking the lead role.
In this movie, alongside Corenswet, we find Rachel Brosnahan from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” who won an Emmy for her role, portraying Lois Lane. Additionally, Nicholas Hoult takes on the character of Lex Luthor. Furthermore, Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi becomes Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion takes up the role of Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced appears as Hawkgirl, and there are more actors joining in.
