James Wan In Talks For Creature From The Black Lagoon Reboot

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for classic horror and a soft spot for iconic movie monsters, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing about the potential return of the Gill-man in a new Creature from the Black Lagoon remake. Having grown up watching the original 1954 film, I remember the thrill of those underwater scenes, the suspenseful music, and the eerie charm of the Gill-man himself.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the anniversary of a classic horror icon like the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This year marks an impressive 70 years since this creature first splashed onto our screens, one of the rare Universal Monsters yet to be overhauled ad nauseam. But it seems that our scaly friend might be making a splash once more, with whispers that horror maestro James Wan is in talks to breathe new life into the Creature from the Black Lagoon remake, stepping up as both director and producer. Here’s to hoping we get another chilling encounter with this iconic beast!

According to Deadline, Wan’s interpretation of Creature from the Black Lagoon will be a contemporary reimagining that emphasizes intense horror while maintaining the essence of the timeless original. In the 1954 film, Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning portrayed the Gill-man, a mysterious creature who encountered issues with an exploration team in the Amazon jungle. Notably, this creature expressed strong affection for Kay Lawrence (Julia Adams), a young woman, but she did not reciprocate his feelings.

Two follow-up films were produced based on the initial movie, but it’s been close to sixty years since another Creature from the Black Lagoon flick has been made. Several directors have endeavored to bring a remake or reboot to life, among them John Landis, John Carpenter, Ivan Reitman, Breck Eisner, and Guillermo del Toro. Notably, del Toro’s proposal for the creature to be involved in a love story with Kay was turned down by Universal. However, he revisited this idea in his award-winning film, The Shape of Water.

Should the latest incarnation of the Creature from the Black Lagoon move ahead, Wan (the producer) will bring the film to life via his Atomic Monster production house, in partnership with Universal Pictures. Notably, Wan has a rich history of directing successful films such as Saw, The Conjuring, Insidious, and both Aquaman movies.
