SAG-AFTRA Foundation Opens Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists and Resumes In-Person Programming

As a lifelong admirer of the arts and a humble observer of the Hollywood scene, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of awe and gratitude upon hearing about the grand opening of the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation has always been a beacon of hope and support for countless artists, but this new facility takes it to a whole new level.

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation recently unveiled the launch of the Meryl Streep Arts Center, dedicated to artists in the performing industry.

The 15,000 square-foot building, which bears Streep’s name as the most generous contributor in the Foundation’s almost 40-year span, is situated on the 10th floor of the Union’s headquarters on Wilshire Boulevard. This modern facility serves as a central point, dedicated to helping artists from SAG-AFTRA enhance their talents and progress in their careers by refining their skills.

Courtney B. Vance, head of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s board, expressed his admiration for Meryl Streep’s longtime commitment: “For decades, Meryl Streep has been a steadfast and unassuming advocate for our Foundation and her fellow actors. In times of great hardship in our community, Meryl has shown remarkable swiftness in providing aid to those performers who were struggling the most.”

He added, “Naming our new Center in her honor is our way of expressing gratitude for her unwavering commitment and generosity, as well as embodying the excellence she exemplifies in our industry. The Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists will encourage and nurture the talents of countless performers, serving as a beacon of inspiration to us all. We are immensely proud to unveil this vibrant new home where SAG-AFTRA artists can connect, collaborate, and grow together. We eagerly anticipate the remarkable work, creativity and careers that will come from it.”

Among the latest additions is the Nicole Kidman Lounge, an elegantly designed and cozy area specifically for panelists and guests of the Foundation to unwind and prepare prior to their “Conversations” and “The Business” sessions. This space was thoughtfully crafted in partnership with Kidman, a significant contributor to the Foundation.

As a devoted cinephile, I’d be thrilled to share my experience at the Leonardo DiCaprio On-Camera Lab, a haven designed for aspiring actors. Here, we can create top-notch self-tapes using state-of-the-art cameras, lighting, and sound equipment, enhancing our on-screen presence significantly. The dedicated staff is always ready to lend a helping hand as readers, providing valuable creative and constructive feedback throughout the recording sessions.

Casting Access classes will also be held, led by industry professionals.

Cyd Wilson, head of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, stated, “The launch of the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists represents a significant achievement for our organization. This center offers exceptional resources and chances to SAG-AFTRA members at no cost.” Wilson further explained, “Moreover, our foundation manages and runs its programs in Los Angeles, New York, and online, thanks to charitable donations, grants, and sponsorships.”

With the SAG-AFTRA foundation planning to restart all its face-to-face activities, screenings will now take place at the modern Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Screening Room – a cutting-edge facility that bears their names as a mark of appreciation for their significant contributions to the organization.

In this “LG-powered” screening area, we’ll be running our “Conversations” series and “The Business” panels, courtesy of the Foundation. The screenings will take place on an impressive 200-inch 4K direct-view LED cinema display from LG Electronics, known as “Miraclass,” offering a cinematic experience. To enhance this, you’ll also find immersive surround sound. This room is exclusively reserved for SAG-AFTRA performers who have generously contributed to the Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program, supporting their fellow artists in need.
