Borderlands Movie Is A Huge Flop Over First Weekend

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of adaptations – some that soared and others that, well, didn’t quite make it past the starting line. The Borderlands movie, unfortunately, falls into the latter category. Despite its promising cast and the undeniable allure of the source material, this film seems to have missed the mark significantly.

As a passionate fan, I must admit that I was quite disappointed by the reception of the Borderlands film by critics. Yet, history has shown us that negative reviews don’t always equate to box office failure, as many critically panned movies have thrived. Regrettably, this wasn’t the story for the Borderlands movie, as it struggled mightily during its opening weekend in the US, earning just $8.8 million.

In the international box office, the film generated approximately $7.7 million, bringing its total worldwide opening to around $16.5 million. However, Variety, who provided these figures, characterized this start as underwhelming or disappointing.

Approximately 60% of the Borderlands movie’s production expenses have been recovered through pre-sales to international cinemas; however, this figure falls short of expectations for the film, given its reported production cost of $115 million and additional advertising and distribution costs estimated at around $30 million. In simpler terms, although a significant portion of the movie’s production costs have been recouped, it’s still considered a letdown because the total expenses were quite high.

Besides receiving negative reviews from critics, the movie Borderlands has been given a D+ rating on CinemaScore, which gauges audience opinions. This film is not only one of the most criticized major films of 2024 but also one of the biggest flops at the box office in 2024 thus far.

The blockbuster video game film that has raked in the most money to date is “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” amassing over $1.3 billion globally (and receiving generally favorable reviews from critics). Check out the other top-performing video game films in the gallery below for more information.

Despite being a well-known and loved IP with a devoted fanbase, as well as boasting a star-studded cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Kevin Hart, and Edgar Ramirez, Borderlands fell short of expectations. As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited to share that no matter how well or poorly the Borderlands movie does at the box office, it won’t impact the Borderlands video game franchise. That’s because the financial risks lie with Lionsgate, the studio behind the movie, as Randy Pitchford, head of Borderlands developer Gearbox, made clear. We’re focused on delivering top-notch gaming experiences!

“I’m not directly impacted by the financial aspects of the film production since those funds belong to the movie studio. However, if the studio experiences financial losses, it might decide against producing another movie, which I would find unfortunate.”

Strauss Zelnick, who heads Gearbox’s parent company Take-Two and has experience in film production, encouraged viewers to watch the movie even though it received negative criticism.
