Leonardo DiCaprio Crime Thriller ‘The Departed’ Climbs Streaming Charts

For over thirty years, Leonardo DiCaprio has proven himself to be a remarkably versatile actor. He’s known for avoiding franchise films and superhero roles, instead choosing diverse and complex characters in a variety of genres. When you see his name in a movie’s credits, you can usually expect a powerful and unforgettable performance.

Later in his career, Leonardo DiCaprio has frequently collaborated with director Martin Scorsese. They’ve worked together on six films, with another currently in production, making them one of the most famous actor-director partnerships in recent film history. One of their most notable projects is the 2006 crime thriller The Departed, which is a remake of the highly-regarded Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs.

Martin Scorsese’s The Departed is widely considered one of his greatest achievements. The film marked a return to the gangster movies that first made him famous, something he’d only touched upon briefly with 2002’s Gangs of New York (also starring Leonardo DiCaprio). As with many of his films, The Departed boasts an incredible cast, and DiCaprio is just one of the many actors who deliver standout performances in this critically acclaimed crime saga.

When it was released, both audiences and critics loved The Departed. The film earned over $291 million, making it one of the director’s biggest hits and one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s most successful films of the 2000s. Critics gave it a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences scored it even higher at 94%. This positive reception continues today, as the film has recently become popular again on streaming services like AMC+, where it recently reached the #8 spot on their charts.

Redemption Amid the Chaos

Martin Scorsese’s The Departed centers around a complex situation: both the Massachusetts State Police and a powerful Boston crime organization have been infiltrated by undercover agents. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) appears to be a promising new officer, quickly becoming part of a special investigative unit. However, he’s secretly working for the mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), acting as his inside man within the police force. Simultaneously, Costello takes an interest in Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is actually an undercover police officer tasked with gathering evidence to dismantle Costello’s criminal empire.

As Costigan and Sullivan become increasingly immersed in their investigations, both realize someone within their organizations is secretly working against them. They desperately try to avoid detection while simultaneously trying to outmaneuver each other, leading to a dangerous and violent pursuit of justice filled with betrayal and suspense.

The Gangster Film That Finally Earned Scorsese His Only Oscar

Many consider DiCaprio’s performance in this film to be among his finest. He brilliantly portrays a flawed hero striving for redemption, delivering a complex and emotionally raw character by fully immersing himself in the role. DiCaprio embodies Billy so convincingly that it’s difficult to picture any other actor playing him – he perfectly captures both the character’s intensity and emotional vulnerability.

Despite receiving a lot of recognition from various award groups, Leonardo DiCaprio surprisingly wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. He starred in both a critically acclaimed film and the intense drama Blood Diamond that year, and it was Blood Diamond that earned him a Golden Globe nomination (he was nominated for both films at the Globes). However, Forest Whitaker was the clear frontrunner that awards season for his performance in The Last King of Scotland, and he ultimately won most of the major awards.

Although Martin Scorsese had a long and celebrated career, The Departed was the film that finally brought him the recognition he deserved. It was a huge success at the Academy Awards, winning four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. This win was particularly significant as it marked Scorsese’s first – and so far only – Best Director Oscar after numerous nominations. Interestingly, despite being nominated ten times, the Academy chose The Departed as the film to honor with that award, even though many consider it isn’t his most famous work. It remains his only film to have won the Best Picture Oscar.
