Disney is known for its fantastic movies and TV shows, especially in the fantasy genre. While they’ve created many memorable programs, one in particular feels ripe for a modern update. Disney excels at both animated and live-action series, though animation is where they truly shine.
As a huge animation fan, I’ve always appreciated how much freedom it gives creators, and Disney really knows how to use that. They’ve given us some amazing animated TV shows over the years – I still love Recess, Phineas and Ferb, and Kim Possible, and it’s great that most of them wrapped things up nicely. But for me, one show stands out as being particularly deserving of a revival: Gravity Falls. It did have a satisfying conclusion, but I honestly think there’s so much more story to tell, and I’d be first in line to watch a reboot!
Gravity Falls Is One Of Disney’s Best Animated Shows Of All Time
Gravity Falls is a funny, mysterious, and fantastical animated series created by Alex Hirsch. It originally aired on Disney Channel from 2012 to 2016. The show follows 12-year-old twins, Dipper (voiced by Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal), who spend their summer vacation with their great uncle Stan in the quirky town of Gravity Falls, Oregon, after moving from California.
The town of Gravity Falls is full of hidden mysteries, and Dipper and Mabel become determined to uncover them after Dipper discovers a strange journal. This journal details the unusual creatures and events happening in town. They’re joined in their investigation by Soos, Wendy, and their Grunkle Stan, who surprisingly knows quite a bit about the town’s secrets.
Gravity Falls was a hit with both critics and viewers, who loved its unique atmosphere, imaginative storytelling, complex mythology, memorable characters, and meaningful themes. Despite being filled with fantasy and humor, the show explored deeper topics like guilt, family bonds, love, and loyalty.
Despite only lasting two seasons, Gravity Falls tells a complete and satisfying story with well-developed characters. It’s full of intricate details that keep viewers hooked. The ending, with Stan and Ford embarking on new journeys, strongly suggests the possibility of a revival, hinting at many more stories within this universe.
Why Gravity Falls Season 3 Didn’t Happen
Even though Gravity Falls was a hit with a wonderfully creative world, it only lasted for two seasons. Unlike some other Disney shows that were cut short unexpectedly, Gravity Falls was always intended to have a limited run. Creator Alex Hirsch explained to Variety in 2015 that he had a specific ending in mind from the beginning, and two seasons was how he planned to tell the complete story.
Although many fans were sad when Gravity Falls ended after just two seasons, this actually demonstrates one of the show’s greatest qualities. The show feels complete and well-crafted because its creator, Alex Hirsch, had a clear vision for its ending. While it would have been fun to explore more of Gravity Falls, Hirsch was able to tell the story he wanted, in the way he wanted.
Gravity Falls Might Be Getting A Worthy Replacement
As of today, there aren’t any plans for a new season of Gravity Falls or even a reboot, which is a shame! But the story hasn’t completely disappeared – we’ve gotten new books, with The Book of Bill being the latest release in 2024. Still, I’m getting really excited because it feels like a brand new show is coming along that could capture the same magic and spirit as Gravity Falls.
Matt Braly, known for his work on the animated series Gravity Falls, is developing a new show called Clara & The Below. The series will be set in a supernatural world and feature a mystery-driven storyline, similar in tone to Gravity Falls.
Clara & The Below is a project created with support from fans, and the first episode will be available to watch for free on YouTube on December 25, 2026. While the show is just getting started, there’s a chance a larger studio could get involved, providing more funding and a wider audience for its four planned installments.
Many fans would love to see a continuation of Gravity Falls, whether as a full reboot or even just a special episode catching up with Dipper, Mabel, Stan, Ford, Soos, and Wendy. While we wait for that possibility, a new show is coming that might capture some of the same magic.
