New Lord of the Rings movie will be set after Frodo’s death

Peter Jackson is creating a new Lord of the Rings film set after Frodo (played by Elijah Wood) has passed away.

Warner Bros. is continuing to build its Lord of the Rings universe with another new film, separate from the already announced prequel, ‘The Hunt for Gollum.’ That prequel, directed by Andy Serkis, is scheduled for release in 2027.

A new Lord of the Rings film is being made with Peter Jackson and Stephen Colbert. You might know Colbert as the host of Late Night, but he’s also a huge fan of Tolkien’s work – he even had a small role as an extra in one of The Hobbit movies!

The new Lord of the Rings movie is a sequel and will take place years after Frodo’s death.

Peter Jackson’s latest film, The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, revisits the beloved hobbits – Sam, Merry, and Pippin – as they share memories of their original adventure. Here’s what the story is about:

Fourteen years after Frodo’s death, Sam, Merry, and Pippin revisit the places where their great journey started. At the same time, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers an old secret that suggests the War of the Ring could have been lost much earlier than anyone realized, and she’s determined to find out why.

Stephen Colbert shared in a new video that the plot of his upcoming movie is inspired by sections of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original book.

Colbert explained to Jackson that the idea stemmed from chapters ‘Three Is Company’ through ‘Fog on the Barrow-Downs.’ He wondered if those sections could work as a standalone story within the broader narrative, and if they could stay true to both the original books and the films Jackson had already created.
