You won’t believe this! That adorable deer that escaped from Nara and was causing a stir in Osaka? Well, it’s been caught! Apparently, it wandered right into an Osaka police station – can you imagine?! Everyone was so worried about it, and I’m just relieved it’s safe now.
I heard this deer was wandering around a police station area in Joto Ward since the evening of March 24th! Thankfully, officials were able to safely guide it into a cage on Wednesday, March 25th. Now it’s at a temporary animal facility in Osaka while they figure out a more permanent home for it. It’s good to know it’s safe!
Over the past few days, a deer became something of a local celebrity in Osaka’s Miyakojima Ward, about 1.5 miles from Osaka Station. While the deer seemed peaceful, authorities initially decided not to try and catch it, but they did advise people not to get close or offer it food.
The city of Osaka has dispatched staff to protect deer that have traveled from nearby Nara. These deer are considered national treasures under the law, making their safety a priority.

Japan’s viral deer can’t go back home
Authorities suspect the deer originated from Nara Park. However, Nara Governor Makoto Yamashita explained that deer leaving the park lose their special protected status as natural monuments. Once they venture outside the park boundaries, they are simply considered wild animals and are managed accordingly under standard wildlife protection laws.
Yamashita explained that a deer caught in Osaka couldn’t just be released in Nara, using the analogy that one prefecture wouldn’t want Osaka sending a captured bear its way.
The incident with the deer went from being a humorous online story to a serious legal issue because of a recent decision. Osaka Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama initially stated the deer would be considered a pest if caught, and the city then announced it was looking for a place within Osaka Prefecture to relocate the animal.

This isn’t the first time deer have wandered out of Nara Park. Back in March, Kansai TV reported several deer leaving Nara, including one group of six that even caused a bus to stop when they walked through a neighborhood before heading west.
Nara Park is becoming so crowded that younger male deer are being forced to leave, contributing to a record population of 1,465 deer last year. Once these deer leave the park’s protected area, the responsibility for managing them shifts to the neighboring city of Osaka.
