Sony Honda Mobility has stopped plans for its initial Afeela car model, not long after demonstrating PlayStation features within the vehicle at CES 2026.
The company demonstrated new car features at the event, like the Astro Bot and Gran Turismo-inspired dashboard displays. They also highlighted customizable engine sounds based on PlayStation games and the ability to stream PlayStation games directly in the car using Remote Play.
People could have played games on their PlayStation 5 or PS4 by streaming them to the car’s entertainment system while the vehicle was parked.
Disappointing news for fans of the car-PlayStation: Sony and Honda have canceled plans for both the Afeela 1 and its successor after deciding to halt development on March 25, 2026.
Afeela 1 canceled after Honda strategy shift
This decision represents a significant change in direction for the partnership. Originally, the venture aimed to create a luxury electric vehicle brand by blending Sony’s technology with Honda’s car-making skills.
Sony Honda Mobility announced the cancellation following Honda’s review of its electric vehicle plans in March.
The company states this change means crucial technologies and resources previously expected from Honda will no longer be accessible, making it impossible to launch the Afeela models as originally intended.
Honda has revised its plans for electric vehicles, and because of this, SHM won’t be able to use some of the technology and resources it previously expected. Consequently, SHM has decided it can’t move forward with its original plans to launch these vehicle models.
The company announced that customers in California who put down deposits for the Afeela 1 will receive complete refunds.
So, I heard the Afeela 1 is supposed to come out in 2026, and it’s gonna cost around $90,000 to get in on the ground floor. If you want all the bells and whistles, though, expect to pay over $100,000. Pretty pricey, but it sounds awesome!
