The Cast of Grey’s Anatomy Will Never Forget Their First Times

As a longtime fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I find myself deeply moved and inspired by the stories of the cast members behind their characters. Chandra Wilson’s account of observing a real open-heart surgery to prepare for her fake medical license is truly awe-inspiring. To stand so close to such a delicate and life-altering procedure must have been an incredibly humbling experience, one that I’m sure added a layer of depth to her portrayal of Dr. Miranda Bailey.

At the D23 Expo on Saturday morning, the actors from the long-running TV series “Grey’s Anatomy” commemorated over two decades of surgical procedures, emotional upheavals, and musical moments by Snow Patrol. They’ve treated countless patients, yet seem to have minimal tolerance for delays. During a Q&A session, James Pickens Jr., Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone, Kim Raver, Chandra Wilson, Will Station, and Kevin McKidd were asked about their initial surgeries and patients. Their recollections ranged from vivid to hazy. When prompted about his first surgery, Pickens joked about forgetting his morning meal. However, he eventually remembered that it was George’s unfortunate appendectomy that was his first surgical experience.

“Scorsone clearly recalled her debut on Grey’s Anatomy. ‘Upon joining the show,’ she explained, ‘I arrived with a patient in tow. It turns out Amelia and this man had a romantic encounter in an airplane. She was kissing him when she suspected he had a brain tumor. So, she presented him to Derek as a gift.’ The episode was named ‘Superfreak,’ reflecting Scorsone’s view of Amelia.”

As a dedicated film enthusiast and TV medical drama aficionado, I can’t forget the real-life open heart surgery I witnessed to prepare for my fictional medical license, unlike Chandra Wilson’s first TV surgery. “A five-month-old baby was born with a hole in her heart,” she explained. “I assumed I’d be watching from the balcony, as we do on Grey’s, looking down. But no, I found myself right there on the floor next to it…I stood there, just observing this bloodless procedure that saved this baby girl and allowed her to lead a healthy life.” On the other hand, my observation didn’t share the same bloodless experience as Teddi Altman, the cardio-thoracic specialist character played by Sarah Drew. “My experience wasn’t bloodless,” she admitted.
