‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’: Jon Favreau Teases First ‘Star Wars’ Movie in More Than 5 Years

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s seen the original trilogy more times than I care to admit, this news has me absolutely beeping with excitement! Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are back at it again, weaving their magic in the galaxy far, far away. The thought of Din Djarin and Baby Yoda gracing the big screen is a dream come true for many of us fans.

Din Djarin and Baby Yoda are returning to a galaxy far, far away.

At the D23 event in Anaheim last Friday, I had the privilege of getting a sneak peek at the upcoming “Star Wars” movie, titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” This highly-anticipated feature stars Pedro Pascal as the title character – the masked bounty hunter from the Disney+ series. Accompanying him is none other than our lovable little companion, Grogu. I can hardly wait to see this dynamic duo in action!

Favreau promised an “all-new adventure following these two characters.”

The audience at D23 erupted in applause when Babu Frick soared aloft in a compact spacecraft, accompanied by Grogu. They became even more excited as Grogu called out “good luck” with his distinctive purr.

As a dedicated cinematic enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be witnessing the first major movie spinoff from Disney+’s “The Mandalorian,” a series I deeply admire. The genius behind this creation, Jon Favreau, is set to direct this feature film. This epic story unfolds in the galaxy after the downfall of the Galactic Empire, as depicted in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.”

Favreau, along with Kathleen Kennedy (President of Lucasfilm) and Filoni (Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm who was also the former supervising director of the cherished animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”), are jointly producing the film.

“Ever since I fell in love with the intricate universe George Lucas crafted, I’ve cherished weaving tales within it. The idea of transitioning the adventures of the Mandalorian and his little apprentice Grogu from the small screen to the grandeur of the big screen is nothing short of thrilling for me.”

The popular three-part “Mandalorian” series, spanning three seasons, has been largely appreciated by both fans and critics. Currently, a fourth season of the show is being worked on at Lucasfilm, with plans to connect storylines from “Ahsoka” and other Disney+ Star Wars productions.

Information about the upcoming film remains scarce, such as its position within “The Mandalorian” series timeline and which other actors will join Pedro Pascal. Nevertheless, it’s being discussed that Alien legend Sigourney Weaver might appear in the movie, but specifics about her role are currently kept secret.

“The Mandalorian and Grogu” will release in theaters on May 22, 2026.
