As a lifelong animation enthusiast who’s witnessed the evolution of Pixar from their humble beginnings to their current status as a powerhouse of storytelling, I am thrilled beyond words about Zoe Saldana joining the voice cast of “Elio.” Having grown up with her portraying strong, complex characters that have resonated deeply with me, seeing her take on Elio’s aunt feels like a dream come true.
As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of the storytelling journey for “Elio,” the latest animated masterpiece from Disney-Pixar. In this upcoming film, you’ll meet Elio, an ordinary boy who experiences the extraordinary when he gets inexplicably transported to an interstellar organization. There, he’s selected to serve as Earth’s ambassador across galaxies. Zoe Saldana lends her voice to this captivating character, adding another layer of magic to this intergalactic adventure!
At D23, Saldana expressed her feelings about voicing Elio’s aunt: “I genuinely resonated with the character, and I was eager to portray a family dynamic that mirrors reality on screen. The bond between us in the movie felt genuine and authentic.”
In this Pixar movie, we meet Elio, a dreamer who’s not quite like the others. When an accidental mishap sends him to the Communiverse, a diverse assembly of representatives from distant galaxies, he’s mistakenly taken as Earth’s ambassador. Overwhelmed and underprepared for this role, Elio must navigate strange new relationships with peculiar alien creatures, overcome challenging ordeals, and ultimately uncover his true identity.
Initially showcased at the 2022 D23 Expo, this highly-anticipated sci-fi adventure is now set to debut on June 13, 2025 (previously scheduled for 2024 but rescheduled due to last year’s double postponements). Adrian Molina, the co-director and screenwriter of the Pixar Academy Award winner “Coco,” is at the helm of this production. The star-studded voice cast includes America Ferrera as Elio’s mother, Olga; Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa; Brad Garrett as Ambassador Grigon; and Jonas Kibreab as Elio.
Following an uncommon mishap with their 2023 launch titled “Lightyear,” Pixar’s upcoming sequel “Inside Out 2” has surpassed a whopping $1.5 billion in global earnings, making it one of the most profitable films of this year.
