Borderlands Was Originally Filmed As An R-Rated Movie

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say, the Borderlands movie has left me rather disappointed. Not just because it’s not living up to expectations, but because it feels like the filmmakers have watered down the very essence of what makes Borderlands, well, Borderlands!

As a longtime fan of the Borderlands video game series, I must say that I am disappointed with the latest movie adaptation. Having grown up playing these games and immersing myself in their gritty, violent world, I had high hopes for a faithful film adaptation. However, as someone who has spent countless hours exploring the lawless wastelands of Pandora, I find the PG-13 rating to be a significant letdown.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Jimmy O’Dee, the stunt coordinator for Borderlands, revealed that the movie originally contained a significant amount of graphic violence, such as beheadings and limb detachments. However, this content was ultimately cut from the final version of the film.

“O’Dee remembered that at the time we were making a movie with an R-rating, which meant lots of violent scenes such as shooting characters and removing body parts,” he said. “However, many changes can occur during post-production, as they decide where to take the film and what audience it should target. Originally, the plan was pure carnage – just create it first and then adjust in post.”

In the reshoots, Deadpool was overseen by director Tim Miller, yet originally intended director Eli Roth reportedly preferred a more gritty style.

According to O’Dee, “Eli has a fondness for horror,” he expressed. “He’s really into it. Here’s an amusing story: on set, he joined the secondary crew and nonchalantly suggested, ‘Let’s just sever the ankles… yes, grab the knife and chop off the ankles, leaving some stumps behind.’ Sometimes there wasn’t enough gruesome detail for him. Eli was always eager when it came to that type of material. He was a joy to collaborate with, making our work together truly enjoyable.”

If the unrated version of Borderlands is almost complete, it might be possible for it to come out on Blu-ray or 4K UHD in the future. However, if the movie doesn’t perform well this weekend, there might not be much interest in seeing other versions of it.

Borderlands is now playing in theaters.
