‘Saturday Night’ Star Gabriel LaBelle on Playing Lorne Michaels and Trying Not to ‘F— Everything Up’ in the ‘SNL’ Movie

As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that Gabriel LaBelle‘s journey is nothing short of captivating. The young talent has proven his mettle by mastering roles as diverse as a young Spielberg and now, a young Lorne Michaels – quite the feat for a 21-year-old!

On Saturday nights, the well-known saying “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” takes on a fresh significance for Gabriel LaBelle.

On a Thursday evening in Los Angeles, at EbMaster’s Power of Young Hollywood gathering, the actor contemplated taking on the role of “Saturday Night Live” founder Lorne Michaels for Jason Reitman’s upcoming film “Saturday Night,” which centers around the initial airing of the NBC comedy series.

“The last time we spoke, we were discussing ‘The Fablemans’ and your remarkable portrayal of a young Spielberg. Now it seems you’ve delivered another impressive performance as a young Lorne Michaels, according to EbMaster’s Angelique Jackson, referring to your recent breakthrough role in 2022.”

“Let’s wait and see since it hasn’t been released yet. I might unintentionally mess things up,” LaBelle interjected, then continued, “I watched the movie a few weeks back. It’s fantastic! Jason did an amazing job. I feel so honored to be part of such a great project.”

So how did LaBelle prepare to play the legendary “SNL” boss?

“LaBelle mentioned they only met him briefly. She was immersed in numerous books, finding the internet vast. Rather than drawing a caricature, she aimed to capture distinctive mannerisms that those close to him often recall. Essentially, she softened these traits and focused on perfecting his Canadian accent.”

The movie written by Reitman and Gil Kenan recounts the tense and disordered 90 minutes preceding the initial performance. The debut trailer for this film was unveiled a day earlier on Thursday, depicting LaBelle battling persistently to ensure a seamless start under intense stress. However, things seem challenging as difficult cast members and demanding studio bosses hinder his progress.

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, director Reitman stated that casting a 21-year-old Labelle as Michaels, who was 30 when ‘SNL’ debuted, emphasized the idea that the character is struggling to keep up. According to Reitman, “Lorne is still evolving at this point in the story.” He added that Lorne is a prodigious talent with an extraordinary vision, but being so young and having such responsibility can be challenging for an actor to portray effectively.

In addition to LaBelle, the film features an impressive lineup of actors such as Dylan O’Brien (Aykroyd), Cory Michael Smith (Chase), Rachel Sennott (Rosie Shuster), Lamorne Morris (Morris), Nicholas Braun (Jim Henson), Finn Wolfhard (a NBC page), Jon Batiste (Preston), Ella Hunt (Radnor), Cooper Hoffman (Ebersol), Andrew Barth Feldman (Neil Levy), Naomi McPherson (Ian), Willem Dafoe (David Tebet), J.K. Simmons (Milton Berle), and Kaia Gerber (Jacqueline Carlin), along with several others.

If someone asked him if he could potentially host “Saturday Night Live,” perhaps for the October 12th episode that aligns with his upcoming movie’s release on October 11, Labelle expressed his enthusiasm about the possibility.

“He expressed that growing up with Saturday Night Live was a significant part of his life, and the opportunity to actually participate in it would be an additional dream realized.”
