Robert Downey Jr. Turned Down Iron Man Cameo in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ After Reading Scene; Writers Also Had an Idea to Bring the Six Original Avengers Back

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of watching Marvel movies under my belt, I must say that the revelation about Robert Downey Jr.’s decision to pass on a cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine” left me both surprised and intrigued.

In an interview with IndieWire, the co-writers of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, shared that Robert Downey Jr. was approached for a cameo as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Marvel’s latest hit movie. However, Downey declined the offer. Now, it seems logical to them since he is set to return to Marvel, but this time in an unexpected role as Doctor Doom. The creators of “Deadpool & Wolverine” were unaware of Downey’s surprising comeback.

“Wernick stated that we originally planned for him to make a brief appearance, and the initial script featured Happy and Downey in that scene.”

In the early stages of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, employs Cable’s time machine to travel to The Sacred Timeline, aiming to secure a position within the Avengers team. During his meeting with Happy Hogan, played by Jon Favreau, Deadpool is denied due to his self-centered nature and lack of team spirit. The initial plan was also to include Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in this scene.

“Reese mentioned that Ryan Reynolds acted with both of them, hoping to bring Downey into the mix. However, Reynolds was keen on having Favreau too, as they work well together and all three were involved in the same scene.”

In private discussions, it turned out that we were unaware of Iron Man, aka Doctor Doom, being involved. Initially, we thought it unlikely he’d take on two roles simultaneously. However, we speculated that Downey wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to work with Ryan Reynolds, given his charisma. So, Reynolds put the pressure on, and scenes were written for Downey. Yet, what we didn’t realize was that Doctor Doom was actually part of this project behind the scenes.

Downey declined the role, and Reese mentioned that he was the first and only actor to say no, as far as they knew, simply stating “I don’t want to do it.” Luckily, Favreau’s character Happy Hogan had always been included in the scene, allowing it to continue with just him and Deadpool.

“Reese mentioned, ‘We really wished Downey could join us, but Marvel seemed to have a secret card up their sleeve – he’s returning as a new character. If Downey played Tony Stark and Doctor Doom was next, it wouldn’t fit logically,'” or simply, “Reese stated that while they regretted not having Downey, Marvel had a plan with him reprising a different role, making Tony Stark and Doctor Doom in quick succession illogical.”

Instead of just Downey Jr. appearing for Deadpool’s interview, the unwritten concept involved a reunion of all the original Avengers: Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Chris Evans as Captain America.

As a longtime fan of the Marvel universe, I can’t help but be intrigued by the revelation that there was an early version of a scene involving all the Avengers, conceived by the writers, but never actually written. Having grown up watching these iconic superheroes come together on the silver screen, it’s fascinating to imagine what it might have looked like if Deadpool had been present from the very beginning. It adds another layer of depth and complexity to the character that I find truly captivating. The idea of Deadpool taking on the Avengers in his unique way is something that I would have loved to see, as it would showcase both the team’s strength and Deadpool’s wit and humor. While we may never get to witness this scene, the knowledge that it was once considered adds a sense of excitement and curiosity for me as a fan.

“Reese stated that he would become furious and, in essence, lash out at everyone quite aggressively,” said Reese. (This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural and easily readable language.)

It was proposed that character Peter, played by Rob Delaney, could join Deadpool in a scene, setting up the humorous situation where Deadpool struggles to lift Thor’s hammer, while Peter effortlessly does so.

In a casual manner, Reese mentioned that Peter had nonchalantly grabbed Thor’s Hammer in the backdrop. The humor lay in this action. Originally, Peter was intended to be present at the scene. Although there were no written screenplay pages for this idea, it served as the basis for the scene. I recall suggesting that Peter would try to make Captain America swear. As for the specifics, details are hazy, but yes, he intended to scold them both to make sure they understood.

In this scene, only Downey was tasked with reading through it because initially, Tony Stark was meant to be included. Notably, Robert Downey Jr. is set to reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portraying the antagonist Doctor Doom, starting from the 2026 movie “Avengers: Doomsday” and continuing into the 2027 film “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Both of these films will be helmed by the Russo Brothers.
