As a long-time gaming enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of Take-Two Interactive, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and anticipation reading this financial report. The success of both Red Dead Redemption and GTA is nothing short of phenomenal, with their combined sales figures putting them in an elite league of their own.
The financial report of Take-Two Interactive for the first quarter of the current fiscal year brought a lot of information. The publisher’s documents not only reaffirmed the release date and potential plans for GTA 6 but also indicated that the Red Dead Redemption series continues to perform very-well.
Red Dead Redemption and GTA
It’s important to note that Grand Theft Auto (GTA) holds the uncontested throne as Take-Two Interactive’s top game, and it’s also a massive success in the gaming market. To date, over 430 million units of the Rockstar Games studio’s Gangster series have been sold.
In simple terms, the fifth part of the series, which is widely recognized as the most beloved, managed to sell more than 200 million units last fiscal year (a feat that was accomplished before the current one). When compared to other games like ‘Minecraft’ and perhaps ‘Tetris’, no other game has come close to matching this sales figure, even the highly successful ‘Red Dead’ series falls short.
Despite Rockstar’s western game facing strong competition, Red Dead Redemption 2 has managed to sell an impressive 65 million copies, making it the seventh best-selling video game ever. It may not have surpassed Mario Kart Deluxe 8‘s staggering sales of over 71 million copies yet, but since February alone, it has added another 4 million copies to its tally.
The total sales of the Red Dead series have exceeded 91 million copies.

In the initial phase of fiscal year 2025, Take-Two Interactive saw an uptick of 4% in revenue compared to the previous year, amounting to $1.34 billion. A portion of this growth can be attributed to the amortization of losses related to the acquisition of Zynga in 2022, a deal valued at $12.7 billion. However, it’s important to note that, as Bloomberg highlighted towards the end of 2023, despite some successful titles from the publisher, the acquisition timing coincided with a period of rejuvenation for the mobile market (and certain unfavorable adjustments, like changes in the App Store), which might have affected Take-Two’s performance.

The report also mentions “driving virtual sales in already-released games,” pointing to the NBA 2K series and GTA Online as flagship games in this category.
FIFA from Take Two?
Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two, didn’t directly verify the internet rumors about 2K Sports creating a football game using the FIFA license. Instead, he pointed out the potential difficulties and challenges involved in such a project.
Zelnick emphasized above all that the FIFA license doesn’t guarantee the acquisition of rights to use players, teams, or even football leagues. This complicates negotiations compared to talks with the NBA, NFL, and many other sports leagues.
To put it simply, this means that the publisher would find themselves in a complex situation where they’d need to discuss agreements with numerous parties. This process could prove both lengthy and expensive. Additionally, it’s important to note that many of these entities have previously entered into contracts with Electronic Arts for their latest series, which could present additional challenges.
Of course, Zelnick is aware of the potential benefits of the official FIFA-licensed game. Nevertheless, he also reminded that Take-Two Interactive already has another football series – the mobile manager Top Eleven, allegedly being “number one” on this market.
