As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that “Deadpool & Wolverine” has truly outdone itself. The cameos alone are enough to make any comic book fan’s heart skip a beat, and the inclusion of Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider would have been the cherry on top. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, but I can’t help but wonder if there’s a secret Marvel multiverse pact that prevents Patrick Stewart from crossing paths with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.
In a chat with Collider, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds revealed that he reached out to Nicolas Cage about returning as Ghost Rider in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie. This high-grossing Marvel production has several actors reprising their old comic book roles, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, and Wesley Snipes as Blade. Reynolds is hoping to have Cage be part of the impressive lineup of cameos in this film.
When asked if he might return as Ghost Rider, Reynolds replied affirmatively, stating, “Yes, we definitely had a discussion about it.” However, he also clarified, “But nothing is confirmed yet.”
Nicolas Cage portrayed the character of Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider in two cinematic adaptations based on comic books: “Ghost Rider” (2007) and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” (2011). These films were distributed by Sony, while characters like Deadpool and Wolverine made brief appearances in movies produced by Fox. Notably, Fox was later acquired by Disney.
Although Patrick Stewart was not on the roster of actors sought for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” fans anticipated his appearance as Charles Xavier due to his past roles opposite Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in numerous “X-Men” films, starting from the original in 2000, and his recent cameo as the character in Marvel’s blockbuster hit “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
“Director Shawn Levy stated on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast that Stewart’s return was never brought up in discussions. Emma Corrin did extensively explore the idea of Cassandra’s relationship with Professor X as it’s intriguing to them, but there were no such plans. Not once, not ever considered.”
In the aftermath of “Deadpool & Wolverine” breaking box office records, actors who reprised their roles have publicly thanked Reynolds and Levy. On social media, Evans stated that reprising his role as Johnny Storm was a long-held dream and holds a special place in his heart. It’s been over a decade since he last portrayed the “Fantastic Four” superhero, having played the character in 2007’s “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”
In a surprise appearance, Channing Tatum made his first portrayal of Gambit in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. Although he had long sought to bring this role to life on the big screen at Fox, it never happened until now. In a personal message on his own social media platform, Tatum expressed gratitude to Ryan Reynolds for providing him with the opportunity to introduce himself as the comic book character.
“Tatum expressed he believed Gambit was gone for good, but Reynolds fought tirelessly for both Gambit and himself. He feels indebted to him forever, as he doubts there’s anything he could do that would match the significance of this experience. He adores Reynolds, buddy.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is now playing in theaters nationwide from Disney.
