Battle Royale is no longer Battle Royale, Warzone fans say

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Call of Duty: Warzone has been quite the rollercoaster ride for me. The initial release was nothing short of revolutionary, offering a unique twist to the Battle Royale genre that had me hooked instantly. However, I find myself yearning for the good old days when the game still felt like a true Battle Royale.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been hooked on Call of Duty: Warzone since its release in 2020. It was an exhilarating entry to the Battle Royale genre, offering a unique and invigorating gaming experience. Yet, over these past four years, some players feel that the game has drifted away from its original Battle Royale roots.

In a Battle Royale game like Warzone, typically, multiple players are dropped into a setting where they must fight each other to be the sole survivor. Warzone implemented this concept and drew an enormous player base; it was also the first and only free-to-play title in the Call of Duty series. One appealing aspect of the game was the redeployment feature, which allowed players to revive deceased teammates for a fee. However, players have expressed dissatisfaction with the excessive use of this mechanic as currently implemented within the game.

The current “Battle Royal” mode has lost its essence, no longer focusing on survival, exploration, or scavenging. Instead, constant respawns, easy access to powerful items (flares, DB, Bunkers etc), & excessive money have made it feel like a chaotic respawn fest rather then the BR from Verdansk-WZ2.

I recently came across a thrilling Warzone gameplay video posted by Reddit user GloriousFlame. In this clip, it’s evident that the players were strategically using flares and portable buy stations to bring their teammates back from the brink of elimination in the final circle. Furthermore, the convenience of carrying multiple self-revives allowed downed players to swiftly rejoin the fray as if nothing had ever happened.

In the discussion, Skyline stated, “We already have Resurgence. Why add so many revival options on normal Battle Royale?” I completely concur. While redeployment features are beneficial to a certain degree in a Battle Royale setting, they can become excessive. If the creators intend to keep these mechanics, the Resurgence game mode would be the ideal spot for it.

It’s important to thoroughly revise Battle Royale ahead of its integration with Black Ops 6 later this year. Here are some areas that could use refinement:
