Henry Cavill Got ‘Sick to His Stomach’ After Smoking Cigars for Eight Hours on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Set; Adding Patrick Stewart to Cameos Was ‘Never Considered’

As a seasoned movie-goer who has witnessed the rise and fall of superheroes spanning decades, I must say that the news about Patrick Stewart not returning as Professor X in “Deadpool & Wolverine” left me a tad disheartened. The chemistry between Stewart and Jackman’s characters was a cornerstone of the Fox-backed Marvel movies, and their on-screen bond will forever be etched in my memory banks.

Shawn Levy, director of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” dismissed speculations about Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X in the hit Marvel film during a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. Despite other actors who previously portrayed superheroes in Fox-produced Marvel movies appearing in the film, such as Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Wesley Snipes as Blade, Stewart was not even considered for a reunion with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine on screen.

“Levy confirmed that there had been no talks regarding Stewart’s rumored comeback. The character of Cassandra, Stewart’s potential sibling to Professor X, was indeed thoroughly examined by Emma Corrin due to its intriguing nature. However, Levy clarified that the possibility had never been deliberated upon, not once or twice.”

Fans speculated that Patrick Stewart could reprise his role as Professor X in “Deadpool & Wolverine” because he had previously shared the screen with Jackman in multiple “X-Men” films since the 2000 debut. The blockbuster “Logan” from 2017 marked both Jackman and Stewart’s final appearances in Fox’s “X-Men” series, where they portrayed the deaths of Professor X and Wolverine. Marvel enthusiasts are aware that Jackman made a comeback in “Deadpool & Wolverine” as a different incarnation of Wolverine, and it was crucial for the actor to preserve the integrity of “Logan’s” ending.

“Jackman stated that he’s coming back due to a device in the Marvel universe that allows time-travel. Since it’s based on science, he doesn’t have to interfere with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was crucial for him and likely the fans as well.”

In the 2022 Marvel blockbuster “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Stewart reprised his role as Professor X, fueling speculation about his potential appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” However, it’s important to note that there were no conversations regarding his return.

In an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Levy revealed that he almost included a real wolverine animal in the movie, but time limitations prevented him from doing so. Instead, a scene depicts Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool venturing through various universes to find the ideal Wolverine variant.

“Levy stated that character number seven was indeed a real wolverine,” he said. “We yearned for a genuine wolverine, the animal, to attack Deadpool. However, we developed this idea too close to the deadline, making it impossible to create a convincing digital wolverine. So, I have the idea tucked away in case I need it for future sequels.”

In the film, one version of Wolverine that appears is portrayed by previous Superman actor Henry Cavill. According to Levy, Cavill fell ill due to spending the entire day on set puffing on Wolverine’s cigar, as reported in The New York Times.

“Throughout the whole filming day, Levy noted, he (He) held and puffed on a cigar continuously. The following day, it was shared that Henry felt nauseous due to inhaling cigar fumes for eight consecutive hours, yet not once did he show any signs of backing down.”

In an engaging conversation with EbMaster, I delved deeper into Henry Cavill’s surprise appearance as Wolverine. When discussing this enigmatic character, it’s crucial to use the moniker given by Ryan Reynolds – “Cavillerine.” The moment Ryan bestowed this nickname, I knew it was fitting. He agreed instantly, recognizing its potential for subversion and playfulness. It was also a heartfelt nod to Cavill’s impressive body of work within the DC universe, now expanded by his portrayal of a Marvel hero variant.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
