CBS Officially Ends NCIS After 34 Years

Be warned, the following contains spoilers for the NCIS season 23 episode, “In Too Deep.” After 34 years on the air, NCIS is coming to an end, as shown in the season 23 finale. The show, which first aired in 2003, has been a consistent part of CBS’s schedule for many years. The last few seasons have been challenging, especially after Mark Harmon left the show and his character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, retired in season 19. However, despite a difficult period of change, the series is now nearing its conclusion.

NCIS has been performing well in the 2025-2026 television season, especially with the development of Alden Parker’s character. Season 23 has improved its storytelling by combining interesting cases with engaging personal lives for the characters, and even bringing back familiar faces like Vera Strickland and Ellie Bishop. Throughout the season, a hidden issue was brewing, and it finally comes to light in the episode “In Too Deep.”

Vance Tells Parker That NCIS Is Being Shut Down

The tension between Vance and Parker comes to a head in the twelfth episode of NCIS season 23, where the Director finally reveals the agency is threatened by upcoming budget cuts. Earlier in the season, it was made clear that the Army CID faced layoffs and potential merger with NCIS. Vance had been secretly working to protect NCIS from these changes, making it a shocking moment when he tells Parker in the final scene of “In Too Deep” that it’s not Army CID being shut down – it’s NCIS.

The current version of NCIS is concluding, bringing an end to the agency as it’s been known since its official start in 1992. As shown in the prequel series NCIS: Origins, the agency was originally called NIS before being reorganized and renamed NCIS. While NCIS: Origins hasn’t reached this point in the timeline yet, it was referenced during an earlier appearance of Young Ducky. Given the timing of this storyline in the main series, it’s interesting to wonder if it’s connected to the upcoming name change for the bureau.

It’s unclear why Vance’s team is being shut down, particularly after a long history of successful, high-profile cases. The season 23 finale of NCIS cuts off before Vance can explain further, and before Parker can even react to the shocking news. No one else seems to know what’s happening with the agency either.

What NCIS’s Shutting Down Means For Vance, Parker, & The Rest

“In Too Deep” is the second-to-last part of a special 500th episode of NCIS. Like other big episodes of the show, this one promises to be memorable, and even more captivating following the recent news about Vance. According to CBS, the story, titled “All Good Things,” will focus on the team helping the son of a Marine that Gibbs once aided. However, the fact that NCIS has been disbanded will make their job much more difficult.

With NCIS already confirmed for season 24, the team will definitely return in some form. The bigger question now is what that return will look like. The writers likely have significant changes planned, because introducing a major twist like this without a long-term vision would feel pointless and just be for shock value. This could be the start of a larger evolution for the show, especially after its recent rebrand.
