New York Film Festival Unveils 2024 Lineup: Sean Baker’s ‘Anora,’ Paul Schrader’s ‘Oh, Canada’ and More

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that this year’s New York Film Festival lineup is nothing short of a cinematic feast! The diverse array of films from both returning and debut directors promises an unparalleled exploration of reality, artistry, and storytelling.

Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning dramedy “Anora” along with other Cannes winners, such as Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” and Roberto Minervini’s “The Damned”, will be screened at this year’s New York Film Festival.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the Film at Lincoln Center has unveiled the 33 outstanding films for this year’s main event of their 62nd annual festival. Among the lineup are new creations from esteemed directors who have graced our screens before, such as David Cronenberg with “The Shrouds,” Alain Guiraudie with “Misericordia,” Mike Leigh with “Hard Truths,” and Paul Schrader with “Oh, Canada.” This year also welcomes fresh talent to the festival, including Brady Corbet with “The Brutalist,” RaMell Ross with “Nickel Boys,” and Asif Kapadia with “All We Imagine as Light.” I can’t wait to immerse myself in these stories!

Many movies that have been shown, or will be shown, at film festivals like Cannes, Berlinale, and Venice before reaching New York, are scheduled for the New York Film Festival (NYFF). Notably, NYFF is set to host two world premieres: “Suburban Fury” by Robinson Devor, a nonfiction account of Sara Jane Moore, a potential presidential assassin, and “My Undesirable Friends: Part I — Last Air in Moscow” directed by Julia Loktev, which is a documentary delving into the endurance of independent journalism in Russia under Putin’s rule, particularly during the time leading up to Ukraine’s full-scale invasion.

Dennis Lim, the artistic director of the New York Film Festival, stated, “Our goal for the festival is to portray the current state of cinema, which frequently involves mirroring the condition of the world. The standout feature about the films in our main selection, as well as those we’ll announce soon in other sections, is their focus on cinema’s connection to reality. These films serve as a testament that when wielded by its most impactful creators, film can confront, influence, and redefine the world.”

The New York Film Festival will run from September 27 to October 14, with screenings also taking place at four locations outside its main venue: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Staten Island, Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, The Bronx Museum in the Bronx, and the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens.

Previously declared, the historical drama by Ross titled “Nickel Boys” will kick off the event, Pedro Almodóvar’s film “The Room Next Door” will be the main feature, and Steve McQueen’s historical drama “Blitz,” featuring Saoirse Ronan, will conclude the festival.
