‘Love is Blind U.K.’ Hosts Matt and Emma Willis Tease ‘Divisive’ Cast Members and Why Brits’ ‘Love Language’ Will Surprise International Viewers: ‘I Laughed, I Cried, I Screamed’

As a British expat living in America for over a decade now, I have to say that I am absolutely thrilled by the success of “First Dates Hotel.” It brings back so many memories of my own experiences with British humor and the unique way we express our feelings. The show is a delightful blend of romance, vulnerability, and good old-fashioned banter that only the Brits can pull off.

Matt and Emma Willis are a British equivalent to Nick and Vanessa Lachey, not only because he used to be in a boy band and she transitioned from modeling to television presenting, but also due to their new role as hosts of “Love is Blind,” Netflix’s popular dating series.

On the eve of the premiere of the British adaptation of the show on a streaming platform (August 1), the couple had an interview with EbMaster to talk about the differences between the U.K. series and the original, why they believe the format has been so popular, and who among the cast might stir up the most controversy among viewers…

Many viewers of “Love is Blind” have been quite outspoken about Nick and Vanessa’s impact on the series. Was this a concern for you when you decided to join the cast?

In my experience working on various productions, I’ve learned that pleasing everyone is an unattainable goal. So, when considering a new project, I ask myself three questions: “Do I genuinely enjoy this show?”, “Can I contribute something meaningful to it?”, and “Will I be passionate about it throughout the process?” If the answer is yes to all these questions, then I jump in with enthusiasm and pour my heart into the work. As long as we remain committed to our craft, collaborate effectively, and strive for excellence, that’s all anyone can really ask for. Of course, there will be those who may not appreciate our approach or disagree with certain aspects, but ultimately, staying true to ourselves and our work is the most important thing.

Matt: I haven’t heard anyone talk about those individuals, but they continue to perform their tasks effectively. It seems that many others must find them impressive. Personally, I tend not to give much weight to overly vocal opinions, so I don’t focus on them much.

Emma: It is terrifying, though. The fact that like, it’s gonna have a massive audience.

Matt: Yeah, I forgot about that until recently.

As a movie enthusiast, when we’re working on a remake or adaptation of a beloved series, there’s this palpable anticipation. It’s like whispering to fate, “I really hope they appreciate our take.” Of course, I don’t expect everyone to adore us personally – that’s not the point. What I yearn for is their appreciation of our interpretation because I truly believe it has been crafted exceptionally well.

Matt: We’ve seen every bit of it, and I must say, I was thoroughly entertained. It made me laugh, brought tears to my eyes, even had me yelling at the screen – it has all the elements one could hope for.

Were there any surprises?

Emma: The journey isn’t always predictable. The surprises aren’t just about unexpected twists in the plot, like a romantic couple not ending up together when you thought they would. Instead, it’s about the events and experiences that unfold as they travel their respective paths.

Matt: Things you didn’t expect to be an issue…

Emma: Whether it’s big or small, there are definitely things that happen and surprise you.

Matt: Occasionally, it’s the little aspects of relationships that turn out to be significant. This can also come as a bit of a shock at times.

Emma: But I also love the humor in it. It’s so funny, it’s got such warmth.

Matt: Indeed, it’s incredibly British, and I adore that aspect. The humor in the very first episode when Freddie, the funeral director, quips “Calm down, I’m not going to embalm you” is spot-on British wit. I was delighted by its Britishness. As you watch more, it becomes clearer that mockery or ‘piss-taking’ is a significant expression of affection among the British. This is deeply embedded in their humor and camaraderie. Sometimes, the rest of the world might find this surprising, but I believe that’s what makes Britain unique.

Why do you think the show works?

Emma: The series seems genuinely heartfelt to me. Its climax, such as a wedding, requires sincerity, not casual involvement. However, there are always some individuals who might have ulterior motives, but generally, I believe the majority are there for honorable reasons and with goodwill. It’s delightful to witness love blossom. At times, it can also be amusing to exclaim “Eww, what are they doing?” and cover your eyes. There are moments that are adorably sweet, a tad cheesy, yet endearing. In my opinion, it has all the right elements, truly.

Matt: It’s filled with love at its core, something that seems to be lacking on television nowadays. Watching it is truly enjoyable and uplifting, leaving you in a positive mood.

Is there anything else that gives it a British spin?

Emma: I believe that the humor found in many aspects is distinctively British. It could be the way they express affection by making fun of each other (taking the piss), or the tender moments that come across as truly sincere and endearing. There’s also a unique, charming awkwardness attached to it.

Brits aren’t know for talking about their feelings right?

Matt: They’re in a situation where they must be sincere due to the short time available to determine if this is the right person for their proposal. A wedding in the U.K. is significant, as it’s legally binding and quite elaborate. Consequently, they need to express everything clearly within that timeframe. I was astonished by how open British men were about sharing their feelings, which I believe is beneficial for everyone to witness.

Do you think the U.K. contestants are genuinely looking to find love?

Emma: Yeah, pretty much. I think they are.

Matt: I agree. That seems to be what sets this show apart. The casting is simply outstanding; they’re incredibly meticulous about it.

A hot funeral director is genius.

Matt: I mean, it’s great right?

Emma: Don’t you think everyone’s really relatable?

Yeah apart from maybe Sam…

Emma: You’re not the first person to say that!

People are going to be very vocal about Sam

Emma: He seems likely to stir up quite a debate, doesn’t he? Yet, on the other hand, it’s essential to consider why someone behaves as they do. There must be reasons behind his actions. Perhaps some of his words suggest that he yearns for affection, constantly seeking validation. The very first time he meets Nicole, he asks, “What do you think?” Instead of offering a compliment, it seems like he’s asking for her opinion about him. This indicates that he might be in desperate need of approval and admiration.

Matt: — some deep-rooted thing. He’s the gift that keeps on giving. You just wait.
