Protagonist to Handle Sales for Venice Competition Title ‘Kill the Jockey,’ With North American Premiere Set for Toronto (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s traversed the cinematic landscapes of countless nations, I can confidently say that “Kill the Jockey” is shaping up to be an intriguing and captivating addition to my must-see list. The fusion of humor, absurdist elements, and a touch of the dramatic in this story promises a unique viewing experience, further accentuated by the stellar cast led by Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Úrsula Corberó, and Daniel Gimenez Cacho.

Movie production company Protagonist Pictures has obtained global distribution rights for Luis Ortega’s absurd comedy “Kill the Jockey” titled “End the Jockey”. This film is set to debut globally in competition at the Venice Film Festival and will later premiere in North America within the Centrepiece section of the Toronto Film Festival.

The narrative centers on Remo Manfredini, an outstanding horse rider portrayed by Nahuel Pérez Biscayart. His self-damaging habits are progressively eclipsing his skill, and they pose a risk to his bond with his girlfriend Abril, played by Úrsula Corberó.

On the fateful day of the career-defining race that would absolve me of my crushing debts to my mobster patron Sirena (Daniel Gimenez Cacho), a devastating accident occurred, causing me to vanish from the hospital and roam the streets of Buenos Aires. Liberated from my old identity, I embarked on a journey to uncover who I was truly destined to be. However, Sirena relentlessly sought my whereabouts, alive or dead.

I’m thrilled to share that I’m supporting a film written collaboratively by Ortega, Rodolfo Palacios, and Fabián Casas. This movie boasts an impressive cast, including Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, who won the César Award for his roles in “120 Beats Per Minute” and “My New Friends”. You might recognize Úrsula Corberó from Netflix’s “Money Heist” and Sky series “The Day of the Jackal”. Lastly, the Ariel Award winner Daniel Gimenez Cacho graces our screens in this film, known for his work in “Bardo”, “False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths”, and “Zama”.

Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, stated that Luis is an innovative director in cinema who has demonstrated his talent as one of Argentina’s most captivating filmmakers. He added that the unique humor and style of the movie “Kill the Jockey,” combined with exceptional performances by Nahuel and Úrsula, make it a must-watch.

I’m part of a collective effort to bring this film to life, with Benjamin Domenech, Santiago Gallelli, and Matías Roveda from Rei Pictures taking the lead, as they did for “The Settlers,” “The Rescue,” and “Zama.” El Despacho’s Ortega and Esteban Perroud are also involved, as is Axel Kuschevatzky and Cindy Teperman from Infinity Hill, who previously worked on “Argentina 1985.” Lastly, Charlie Cohen from Warner Music Entertainment and Exile’s Nando Vila and Paz Lázaro are also part of our production team.

As a film enthusiast with years of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that having Benicio Del Toro, Isaac Lee, Ron Broitman, Federico Frágola, Phin Glynn, Delfina Montecchia, and Martín Fisner as executive producers on a project is quite an impressive lineup. Their collective expertise and accolades speak volumes about the caliber of work that can be expected from this production.

The movie is jointly produced by Piano, El Estudio, Snowglobe, Jacinto Films, and Barraca; it’s also associated with VIX, Pampa Films, and Gloriamundi, and collaborates with Dim Films and Fundación Ernesto Sábato.

“Working alongside Protagonist Pictures on ‘Kill the Jockey’ is an honor, as their innovative method of delivering top-notch movies worldwide aligns flawlessly with our unique production. We’re overjoyed to be working with them,” Domenech expressed.

Previously, Ortega’s movie “El Angel” had its world debut in Un Certain Regard section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. This film was chosen to represent Argentina for the Oscars that year. Based on the real-life story of infamous ’70s Argentine serial killer Carlos Robledo Puch, the movie set a new box office record for local productions in Argentina upon its release, marking an impressive opening.
