Serena Williams Calls Out Paris Restaurant for ‘Denying Access’ to Her and Her Children: ‘Yikes … Always a First’

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the biographies of legendary sports figures, I find Serena Williams‘ recent experience at The Peninsula Paris to be a poignant reminder of the persistent challenges faced by trailblazing icons, even those who have achieved unprecedented success.

On Monday evening, Serena Williams expressed disappointment over being denied entry to the rooftop restaurant of a luxury hotel in Paris with her children. The esteemed tennis player, who carried the Olympic torch during this summer’s opening ceremony, narrated an incident that took place at The Peninsula Paris on X (previously known as Twitter).

“Uh-oh, @peninsulaparis, it seems I’ve been barred from dining on the rooftop in a fancier eatery that happens to be vacant… a first for me, and even more so with my children,” Williams penned, using an Olympic hashtag.

Oh dear @peninsulaparis, it seems I’ve been barred from dining on the rooftop in a fancier eatery, which is unusual for me. However, I’ve never encountered this issue with my children before. Quite a first! 🙄#Olympic2024

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve extended my reach to the esteemed Managing Director of The Peninsula Paris, expressing my curiosity about an upcoming collaboration with Williams. Regrettably, their representatives haven’t yet responded with a comment.

Serena Williams initially touched down in Paris during late July, preceding the Olympic opening ceremony where she served as a torch bearer. The former professional tennis player, who retired following the 2022 U.S. Open, was among several athletes chosen to carry the torch, joined by esteemed figures such as nine-time medalist Carl Lewis, beloved French stars Zinedine Zidane, Teddy Riner, and Marie-José Pérec, along with Tony Parker and fellow tennis titan Rafael Nadal. Since then, she’s stayed in Paris to enjoy the Olympics, attending numerous tennis matches throughout the past few weeks, including Novak Djokovic’s triumph over Carlos Alcaraz to clinch gold in the men’s singles tournament.

Throughout her career, Serena Williams accumulated four Olympic gold medals. One of these was won in the women’s singles event at the 2012 London Games. The remaining three were secured in the women’s doubles competition, where she and her sister Venus Williams triumphed in Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008, and once again in London 2012.
