Cannes’ Un Certain Regard Queer Romance ‘Viet and Nam’ Finds North American Home With Strand Releasing (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for international cinema, I must say that “Viet and Nam” is a captivating masterpiece that left me spellbound. Having traversed the globe to attend film festivals, I’ve seen my fair share of love stories, but this one, set against the backdrop of coal mining, stands out as uniquely poignant.

Strand Releasing has obtained the distribution rights for “Viet and Nam” in North America, a film that was initially screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival under the category Un Certain Regard.

Under the guidance of director Truong Minh Quý, this film beautifully narrates the heartfelt love tale between two young coal miners who must endure separation but are willing to make significant sacrifices to remain together. On the international stage, this movie is distributed by Pyramide International, with Pham Thanh Hai and Dao Duy Bao Dinh portraying the leading roles as Viet and Nam, respectively.

“Marcus Hu from Strand Releasing stated that ‘Viet and Nam’ was one of the most captivating films he’s recently watched, filled with romance, tragedy, and tenderness, and directed in a distinctive manner reminiscent of our esteemed filmmakers,” said Marcus Hu.

“Agathe Mauruc from Pyramide International shared her excitement that after the impressive run at Cannes under Un Certain Regard, ‘Viet and Nam’ will now be introduced to American viewers. She is also thrilled about renewing their partnership with Strand, a long-standing collaborator. Agathe believes that Strand will effectively represent Trương Minh Quýt and the film in North America.” (Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing was part of the deal negotiation.)

The film titled “Viet and Nam” is scheduled to debut at North American film festivals, with a planned theater release in early 2025.

“The movie ‘Viet and Nam’ is a joint production among Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, France, Netherlands, Italy, and Germany. This film was created by Epicmedia in collaboration with Cinema Inutile, Deuxième Ligne Film, E&W Films, Volos Films, and Scarlet Visions.”

Strand Releasing has recently obtained the rights to Agathe Riedinger’s film “Wild Diamond,” which was showcased at Cannes and received positive feedback. Their collection of upcoming releases features Fatih Akin’s “Rhinegold,” Bradley Rust Gray’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror,” and Ray Yeung’s “All Shall Be Well.”
