Meg Ryan to Be Honored at Sarajevo Film Festival, Screens ‘What Happens Later’

As a movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood over the past few decades, I must say that the announcement of Meg Ryan receiving the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival is truly heartening. Her contribution to the art of film, particularly in romantic comedies, has left an indelible mark on my childhood memories and continues to resonate even today.

Meg Ryan is set to be honored with the Sarajevo Heart of Film Award during the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, acknowledging her significant impact on cinema through her acting work.

Apart from showcasing “Ithaca,” which was released in 2015 and was her first directorial project, Ryan will also share her recently created romantic comedy movie titled “What Happens Later.” This movie, produced by Bleecker Street Media, has Ryan in the lead roles as both its director and writer. She’ll be acting opposite David Duchovny in this film.

Ryan will additionally showcase a nostalgic screening of her 1998 blockbuster romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail” at Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema, located in Bosnia’s city, which is the same spot where this movie was initially screened 25 years ago during the 5th Sarajevo Film Festival back in 1999.

Ryan is set to conduct a workshop, which will be led by renowned Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanović, famously recognized for his Academy Award-winning movie “No Man’s Land.” The event aims to provide valuable perspectives on different phases of Ryan’s professional journey.

Jovan Marjanović, head of the Sarajevo Film Festival, expressed: “Ryan didn’t just captivate us with her remarkable acting, but she also demonstrated her talent as a director and scriptwriter. It is a privilege for us to award her the Heart of Sarajevo.”

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge the undeniable comedic charm that I’ve showcased in my roles, such as Sally Albright in “When Harry Met Sally,” under the brilliant direction of Rob Reiner and the penmanship of Nora Ephron. This performance earned me a nod at the Golden Globes. Following this, I found myself starring alongside Tom Hanks in Ephron’s blockbuster romantic comedy, “Sleepless in Seattle,” which also landed me another Golden Globe nomination. My third collaboration with the dynamic duo of Ephron and Hanks was the romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail,” for which I was honored with my third Golden Globe nomination.

Ryan has garnered praise for her unique dramatic performances, such as playing the first military woman nominated for a Medal of Honor opposite Denzel Washington in “Courage Under Fire,” directed by Ed Zwick, and delivering a poignant portrayal of a woman struggling with alcohol addiction in “When a Man Loves a Woman,” alongside Andy Garcia. Her acting in “Promised Land,” where she starred alongside Kiefer Sutherland, earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination.

The 30th Sarajevo Film Festival takes place from Aug. 16 to 23.
