After a lot of hints about a return, the popular 2002 sci-fi series is now climbing the charts on Amazon Prime Video. According to FlixPatrol, it’s quickly becoming one of the most-watched titles available to rent or buy.
Currently, Firefly is the 11th most popular show people are renting on Prime Video. If it keeps gaining popularity, it’s likely to break into the top ten soon.
The recent return of Firefly to the PVOD charts might be due to posts on social media featuring cast members. Each video shows them asking or confirming, “It’s time.” While it’s unclear what this means, many believe it’s a promotion for the new podcast, Once We Were Spacemen.
Scheduled for release in July 2025, Once We Were Spacemen will be a podcast featuring conversations with Nathan Fillion and other creative individuals about their lives and careers. As Tudyk explained, the podcast will be a unique format, exploring the paths these people have taken.
The podcast Once We Were Spacemen features hosts who have played a wide range of roles beyond their work on Firefly, including aliens, detectives, doctors, and even animals and robots. Now, they use the podcast to connect with other creative people, discovering their past work and current projects.
The Legacy and Impact of Firefly — Explained
Joss Whedon created Firefly, with Tim Minear as showrunner, and it first aired on Fox in 2002. The series follows the crew of the Serenity, a *Fireflyclass spaceship captained by Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds. Reynolds, a former soldier who fought for freedom, now makes a living by smuggling after his side lost the Battle of Serenity Valley. The main cast also includes Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Baher, Ron Glass, and Summer Glau.
Despite being canceled after just one season, Firefly gained a dedicated following. The movie Serenity didn’t provide the satisfying ending fans wanted, and wasn’t successful with critics or in theaters. Plans for more Serenity films to finish the Firefly story were made, but sadly, they never happened.
Firefly is currently available via premium video-on-demand on Amazon Prime Video.
