‘Trap’: Breaking Down the Twists, Turns and Ending of M. Night Shyamalan’s New Thriller

As a long-time fan of M. Night Shyamalan’s work, I must confess that “Trap” has left me both exhilarated and slightly confounded. The film is a rollercoaster ride of suspense, twists, and turns that keeps you guessing until the very end. I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating each new development, even as I questioned the convenience of certain plot points.

WARNING: The following article reveals details about the full storyline of the movie “Trap,” currently showing in cinemas.

It’s hard not to love M. Night Shyamalan.

A daring cinematographer unafraid to make ambitious moves, he’s back in theatres with “Trap”, a fresh serial killer film starring Josh Hartnett, packed with unexpected surprises and intricate plot developments.

The movie starts by showing loving father Cooper (Hartnett) escorting his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to Lady Raven’s (Saleka Shyamalan) high-profile concert. Cooper is concerned by the heavy police presence at the event, which soon turns out to be a setup for capturing a notorious killer called the Butcher. Intriguingly, Cooper has a conversation with a seemingly friendly t-shirt vendor, Jamie (Jonathan Langdon), who reveals this information. As the story unfolds, we discover that Cooper is actually the Butcher himself, as he surreptitiously reviews security footage of his latest victim, Spencer (Mark Bacolcol), on his phone.

At the concert, Riley frequently loses sight of Cooper as he stealthily searches for an exit. To create diversions, he causes commotions such as simulating an explosion at a food stand, providing him chances to slip away undetected. However, he fails to find an escape route and instead encounters the director (Raven’s uncle in a cameo role). In a desperate move, Cooper convinces this individual to allow Riley to perform during a special fan tribute segment of the concert.

Backstage, Cooper notices there’s no obvious escape route. He confides in Raven that he is the Butcher, warning her he’ll harm Spencer if she doesn’t secretly drive him and Riley out of the venue in her limo. However, Raven chooses to be a hero, suggesting instead they drop off Spencer’s father and daughter at their home first. Upon arrival, Raven invites them inside to meet the rest of the family, including matriarch Rachel (Alison Pill) and their son. Cooper is compelled to maintain a normal facade in front of his family until Raven snatches his phone, hides in the bathroom, and livestreams with her fans to help locate and save Spencer.

In this scenario, fans manage to release Spencer, while Raven is captured by Cooper. He confines his family in a bedroom. However, they successfully break free and confront Cooper near his vehicle as he attempts to flee with the singer. This encounter causes him to momentarily halt and ponder how tragically his two contrasting personas have collided.

Next, police arrive at the family’s residence, but Cooper swiftly puts on a SWAT suit and slips away through an underground passage to a neighboring home. Amidst the chaos, he manages to seize control of Raven’s limousine, trapping her again with the Butcher. A nerve-wracking journey ensues, during which Raven successfully breaks free from her restraints and exits the car amidst a throng of people. Regrettably, Cooper also slips away, changing into civilian attire and returning to his own residence.

Upon returning home, Rachel decides to have a conversation with Cooper, disclosing that she alerted the authorities about his planned visit to the concert. This revelation infuriates Cooper, who then understands that Rachel had laced his drinks with his own illicit substances. In response, the police burst into the house yet again, using tasers to apprehend Cooper. As he bids farewell to his loved ones, Cooper secretly takes a spoke from Riley’s bicycle, which he later uses to pick the locks on his handcuffs while in the back of the police van. The story concludes there!

During an amusing scene just after the credits roll, it’s revealed that Jamie is sitting in front of the television, only to discover with astonishment that Cooper was actually The Butcher – a revelation that suggests he unwittingly assisted in Cooper’s escape.

While it offers many highly convenient scenes, “Trap” undoubtedly delivers enough unexpected plots to captivate viewers. It’s possible that a follow-up featuring the Butcher character might appear in the future…
