Olympics: Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Plagued by Gender Controversy Breaks Down in Tears After Winning New Match

As a film enthusiast with a keen interest in both sports and social justice issues, I find myself deeply moved by the story of Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who has faced an unimaginable amount of online backlash due to her gender and athletic prowess. Having spent countless hours watching documentaries about athletes overcoming adversity, I must say that Khelif’s resilience and determination are nothing short of inspiring.

Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer, wept following her victory over Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori. This emotional moment occurred several hours after Hamori had posted (and subsequently removed) a picture on Instagram depicting a muscular, horned creature confronting a female boxer.

Khelif, who received a rockstar’s welcome with enthusiastic applause from the crowd, has faced ongoing criticism online after her quick win against Angela Carini of Italy in a fight that didn’t last long.

Originally sent to Tokyo as one of Algeria’s first three female Olympic boxers three years ago, Khelif encountered some difficulties after her disqualification at the Women’s World Championships last year, which also affected Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting. The disqualifications were due to a gender eligibility test that reportedly found elevated levels of testosterone in their bodies.

Following Khelif’s victory against Carini, allegations surfaced that she had competed in the incorrect gender category. Notable figures like J.K. Rowling shared a fight photo on platform X with the caption, “Could any image symbolize our new men’s rights movement more perfectly?” She further commented that the image depicted “the self-satisfied smirk of a male who is shielded by a biased sports establishment, reveling in the discomfort of a woman he just struck in the face and whose aspirations he has just dashed.” Meanwhile, Elon Musk echoed swimmer Riley Gaines’ statement, “Men don’t belong in women’s sports,” while the owner of X concurred by writing, “Indeed.”

Carini, who walked away from her boxing match with Khelif following her statement about never experiencing such a blow before, has expressed remorse for her actions towards the Algerian athlete post-match. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, she admitted to wanting to offer an apology for not reciprocating Khelif’s handshake after the bout. She explained that she was upset because her Olympic dreams had been shattered and said, “I truly want to apologize to her and everyone else. I was enraged because my Olympics had come to an end.” Furthermore, she expressed sadness over the entire situation, stating that she regretted her opponent as well. If the IOC allowed Khelif to compete, Carini acknowledged, she would honor their decision.

Hamori appeared rattled following the contest yet managed to salute Khelif and offer a subtle smile. Earlier in the day, the Hungarian boxer was reported as stating that “I don’t pay attention to rumors or current social media activity. If my opponent is male, it will be an even greater triumph if I emerge victorious.”
