As a devoted streaming enthusiast who has seen more shows and movies than I can count on my fingers (and toes), I must say that this week’s top performers have truly impressed me. The variety of genres, from the boy band docu-series “Dirty Pop” to the period drama “The Decameron,” showcases the versatility of today’s content creators.
During the period of July 16 to August 1, summertime viewing on streaming platforms is expected to decrease, with fewer total minutes spent watching top original series and films compared to recent weeks.
As a dedicated movie and TV show enthusiast with a keen eye for quality entertainment, I must admit that this past week has been quite exciting in the world of streaming!
In a surprising shift, the reality show “Peacock’s Love Island USA” dethroned “Cobra Kai” on Netflix as the most-watched original streaming series, accumulating 386.5 million minutes of viewership. This is a significant decrease from the previous week when the finale episode attracted an impressive 1.1 billion minutes watched. The documentary series “Dirty Pop,” focusing on boy band manager Lou Pearlman, showed great strength in its debut week, securing the second spot with 320.5 million minutes viewed.
“After six weeks of its release, Apple TV+’s show ‘Presumed Innocent’ climbed up the charts, accumulating a total view time of 306.5 million minutes and securing the third spot. Released on July 25, the period drama ‘The Decameron’ managed to attract 236.3 million minutes watched, placing it fifth in the rankings, just behind ‘Cobra Kai’, which garnered 242.5 million minutes.”
In a more conversational style, we could say: “Netflix’s costume drama ‘Vikings: Valhalla’ (with about 179.5 million views) and the unscripted football series ‘Receiver’ (approximately 149.7 million views) continued to hold their spots among the top 10 rankings.”
In the realm of unexpected hits, “Non Negotiable” – a Mexican action-comedy helmed by Juan Taratuto – took center stage. This film garnered an impressive 147.6 million minutes of watch time and 1.6 million views following its release on July 26. On the other hand, “Knox Goes Away,” a crime thriller directed by and featuring Michael Keaton, managed to secure the No. 6 spot with 123.2 million minutes watched and 1.1 million views after debuting on Max on the same day.
In the top spot for another week, the romantic comedy “Find Me Falling” was watched for a total of 309.3 million minutes by 3.3 million viewers. Meanwhile, “Hillbilly Elegy,” a film adaptation of the 2016 memoir by JD Vance, who was a GOP vice presidential candidate, maintained its second position with 197.9 million minutes watched and 1.7 million views.
In its third full week on Disney+, “Descendants: The Rise of Red” maintained a strong impression, slipping slightly to take the fourth spot, accumulating 141.8 million minutes viewed and garnering 1.5 million views.
