Microsoft Establishes "AA" Studio Inside Blizzard, Halo Dev Gets A Shakeup - Report

As a long-time Blizzard fan who’s seen my share of ups and downs, I must say I’m intrigued by this latest move. Microsoft and Activision forming an AA studio within Blizzard seems like a smart move to me, especially with the talents from King on board. If they can bring that Candy Crush magic to Starcraft or Diablo, well, color me excited!

Based on recent findings, there’s a new squad being formed within Blizzard, jointly by Microsoft and Activision. This team, primarily composed of developers from King (known for creating Candy Crush), will be responsible for developing “AA” games using existing Blizzard intellectual properties.

According to Windows Central’s report, there’s a possibility that some games from AA Studio could be designed for mobile devices. This seems plausible given that their team is primarily composed of developers from King. Furthermore, Microsoft is rumored to be preparing an Xbox mobile store for both iOS and Android in the near future. However, not all the games may be exclusively mobile; the report suggests that not all of them might be designed for this platform.

Reports indicate that Microsoft might be considering methods to cut expenses and potentially develop games using smaller internal teams, rather than large external studios.

In simpler terms, an “AA” game, as mentioned in the article, refers to a title developed with a smaller budget and by a relatively smaller team compared to “AAA” games. The advantage of creating lesser-priced games with fewer personnel is that it potentially minimizes the occurrence of excessive bureaucracy often found within large corporations, according to the report.

This new AA studio would exist alongside Xbox’s larger teams making games on bigger budgets.

In separate parts, the report highlighted that Halo’s developer, 343 Industries, is working towards transforming into a more unified single team to streamline their operations. Earlier, this studio was structured as a divided multi-team setup, which often led to communication complications, according to the report.

TopMob has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details on these changes.

Lately, Xbox has implemented a shift where all their employees based at Microsoft Headquarters are now working together under the same building once more, specifically at the primary offices located in Redmond, Washington.
