Not Only Elden Ring Conquered the Market. FromSoftware's Latest Game Sold in Millions of Copies

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the financial dip FromSoftware experienced last year is nothing more than a blip on their radar. This studio has consistently delivered masterpieces that have redefined the genre and left us breathless with anticipation. Elden Ring was indeed a game of monumental proportions, but even it couldn’t hold a candle to the legendary Dark Souls series.

Last year, it appears that FromSoftware experienced a decline in their financial performance, as their total revenue for the year was approximately 103.2 million dollars – a decrease of nearly 30% compared to the previous year. This information comes from Serkan Toto on X / gamebiz. In the same period ending March 31, 2024, their operating profit dropped by half compared to the preceding fiscal year. Despite this reduction, they managed to maintain a substantial operating profit margin of around 42.5%.

The reason for these recent declines can be traced back close by. While Elden Ring was launched prior to fiscal year 2022, it played a substantial role in FromSoftware’s outstanding financial performance in 2023. The remarkable success of ER not only boosted the studio but also influenced the entire gaming division of Kadokawa. Consequently, the previous 12 months have shown poorer results compared to the strong performance at that time, despite satisfactory sales.

In the just-concluded fiscal year, it was a FromSoftware game – Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon – that topped the list of released titles. Surprisingly, this title sold over 3 million copies, which is more than anticipated by Kadokawa and surpasses the sales of Elden Ring, although not by much. This impressive figure includes sales from Japan as well as globally.

As someone who has witnessed numerous market fluctuations throughout my professional career, I can confidently say that the current dip is not cause for alarm but rather a return to a more stable and even slightly improved state following an exceptional year. Having learned from past experiences, I am optimistic that this fiscal year will make up for any perceived “losses.”

For several weeks now, both Elden Ring and its DLC have been among Steam’s most popular bestsellers. Interestingly, Elden Ring has managed to hold a spot in the top ten despite not being on sale at the moment (it did receive a discount during the Steam Summer Sale).
