Joe Wright’s Venice-Bound Mussolini Series ‘M’ Reveals First Trailer, Featuring Techno Score by the Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the annals of cinema history and appreciating the artistry that goes into crafting a compelling narrative, I must say, the first teaser-trailer for “M – Son of the Century” has piqued my interest in a most intriguing manner.

As a history enthusiast who has always been fascinated by the rise and fall of dictators, I am thrilled to share that the first teaser-trailer for the highly anticipated series “M – Son of the Century,” about Benito Mussolini’s ascent to power, has just been released. Having studied World War II extensively and being captivated by its complex political landscape, I can’t wait to delve deeper into the life story of one of history’s most infamous figures. The series will premiere at the upcoming Venice Film Festival, promising an immersive cinematic experience that I believe will shed new light on Mussolini’s enigmatic character and his impact on the world stage. This is a must-watch for anyone interested in historical dramas or political intrigue!

The vibrant eight-part series is led by Joe Wright, a renowned British director known for “Darkest Hour,” the film that won Gary Oldman an Oscar as Churchill, the British prime minister, and also for “Atonement,” along with other notable works.

The rhythmic “M” soundtrack was created by Tom Rowlands, famously recognized as a member of the innovative British electronic music duo The Chemical Brothers.

Wright explained to EbMaster on the set of the show, filmed entirely at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios last year, that he could experiment with both the look and structure of the production. He described the music as a techno-style score. Furthermore, he mentioned that the visual style would be a blend of ’90s rave culture and “Man with a Movie Camera” [a 1929 avant-garde film by Dziga Vertov], a famous Ukrainian production. Essentially, it’s a fusion of “Man with a Movie Camera,” every gangster movie you’ve ever seen.

Luca Marinelli, known for roles in “The Eight Mountains” and “Martin Eden,” portrays Benito Mussolini during the years spanning 1919, when he established the Fascist party in Italy, up until 1925. During this time, Mussolini, who had seized power with the March on Rome in 1922, delivered a notorious speech in the Italian Chamber of Deputies, declaring himself a dictator following the murder of Socialist MP Giacomo Matteotti. The series offers a glimpse into Mussolini’s personal life, shedding light on his relationships with figures such as his wife Rachele, lover Margherita Sarfatti, and other notable individuals from that era, as suggested by the given synopsis.

“The movie ‘M’ draws inspiration from Antonio Scurati’s award-winning and globally successful novel of the same name, which chronicles the emergence of fascism in Italy and Mussolini’s rise to power using a unique perspective. The script for this film has been crafted by Stefano Bises, who is also known for his work on ‘Gomorrah’ and ‘The New Pope’, in partnership with Davide Serino, a writer from the series ‘1992’.”

Venice Film Festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera expressed to EbMaster that choosing a British director instead of an Italian for this project could offer a more impartial perspective on the events of those years.

All eight of the “M – Son of the Century” episodes will world premiere at Venice.

In collaboration with The Apartment Pictures, which is owned by Fremantle, and Lorenzo Mieli, “M” was produced by Sky Studios. This production was also done in partnership with Pathé and Small Forward. The show is set to debut in 2025 across various European territories such as the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, with Fremantle handling international sales.
