That show, a fantastic gangster saga set during Prohibition, really showcased his knack for compelling drama. It’s no surprise he’s considered a true legend, right up there with masters like Kurosawa, Fellini, and Ozu.

Martin Scorsese rarely directs television, so his involvement in a TV show signals something truly exceptional. He made a cameo and directed Larry David in a memorable mobster role on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and he collaborated with Mick Jagger on the visually striking, though brief, series Vinyl, which captured the energy of 1970s New York rock and roll.

Terence Winter, who previously wrote for The Sopranos, created his own HBO crime drama in 2010. He collaborates with multiple criminal groups in New York and Chicago, and profits from the illegal sale of alcohol in Atlantic City.

It feels a little underrated, honestly, and I think more people should experience this fantastic series.

Boardwalk Empire Had A Stacked Cast

Steve Buscemi is just one example of the incredible cast in Boardwalk Empire. The show boasts an exceptionally talented ensemble, even for HBO. Michael Pitt portrays Nucky’s young apprentice early on, while Kelly Macdonald plays his lover and eventual wife. Michael Shannon appears as a former Prohibition agent who flees, reinvents himself, and becomes a bootlegger in Chicago.

Michael K. Williams, known from The Wire, portrays the formidable gangster Chalky White. Charlie Cox, of Daredevil fame, plays an IRA member who works with Nucky. Stephen Graham, from This is England, takes on the role of the infamous Chicago mobster Al Capone. Boardwalk Empire boasts a truly impressive cast, including Ron Livingston, Jeffrey Wright, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Shea Whigham, among many others.
