Scarpetta Ending Explained: The Killer’s Identity and Motives Revealed

The first season of Scarpetta ends with a surprising reveal, but careful viewers will notice that all the major twists and the identity of the killer are hinted at throughout the season. If the show continues to build on its strengths, it has the potential to become as popular as Prime Video’s Reacher. Both shows are based on successful, ongoing series of bestselling books and focus on suspenseful psychological thrillers.

The Scarpetta series, much like Lee Child’s Reacher novels, already has a large and dedicated fanbase. However, unlike Reacher, the show hasn’t taken a simple, book-by-book approach to its adaptations. A key to Reacher’s potential longevity is that the series began by adapting the very first book in the novel series.

Unlike some other adaptations, the first season of Scarpetta tells two stories at once: one happening now and another from 28 years ago. Because of this, the season covers not one, but two Scarpetta novels. The story set in the past is based on Postmortem, the very first book in the series, which was originally published in 1990.

Officer Ryan Was The Killer In Scarpetta’s Ending

The current story echoes themes from the 2021 story, Autopsy. While the killer from the past is unmasked in the second-to-last episode, the present-day killer isn’t revealed until the very end of the series. By examining soap and linking the killer’s victims to phone calls, the younger Scarpetta figures out the killer is someone who works as a 911 operator.

She finds the killer and, after a short fight, stabs and kills him. Immediately after, Pete arrives and shoots the killer multiple times, then lies to protect Scarpetta, claiming he was the one who caught and killed him. Scarpetta keeps this secret from her husband, and their relationship ultimately falls apart in the final episode.

In the season finale, Scarpetta is left to cope with the news that Benton wants a divorce, leaving her isolated in her large, secluded home. Meanwhile, Dorothy and Pete work things out at their rental, Lucy has a meeting with Matt Petersen, and Maggie gets ready to reveal her boss’s role in the cover-up of Cammy’s murder, which happened months ago on a hiking trail.

Officer Ryan, who appeared briefly in earlier scenes, shows up at Scarpetta’s house intending to kill her. He reveals he’s been the murderer the entire time, explaining that he first became fascinated with ritualistic killing when he responded to one of the original murders years ago. But his connection to the initial killer runs even deeper than that.

Scarpetta’s Ending Revealed Officer Ryan’s Motive

It all started to make sense when we learned about Ryan’s past. He wasn’t just a copycat; he was connected to the original killer – his uncle, as it turned out. He’d actually seen one of the original murders as a child. He struggled to kill Cammy the same way the first killer did, but with Gwen Hainey… that was different. He actually said her death, and everything he did to her afterward, was “Perfection.” It was chilling to hear him say it, a truly twisted and disturbing boast.

The flattened penny Scarpetta found on the train tracks proved to be a crucial piece of the puzzle. It linked back to a childhood memory: Ryan had been asked to flatten a penny as a distraction while his uncle committed a murder years ago. He’d repeated this strange act before each of his own killings, ultimately allowing Scarpetta to figure out who he was.

Echoing a terrifying attack from decades past, Officer Ryan attempted to strangle Dr. Scarpetta in her home. She fought back, striking him with a baseball bat and forcing him down the stairs, then continuing the attack with the bat until he was fatally injured.

Why Lucy Meets Matt Petersen In Scarpetta’s Ending

Lucy’s efforts to revive Janet led her to meet with Matt Petersen. Although Janet’s AI program may have been intentionally erased with Scarpetta’s assistance, Petersen had previously connected with Janet’s widow by promising to do whatever it took to bring back his own deceased wife, even years after her passing.

Based on the final scene, where Lucy appears to be involved in one of Petersen’s ritualistic ceremonies, it’s likely she’s now helping him find ways to bring people back to life, presumably to reunite them with their deceased wives. This also clarifies why Petersen and Gwen Hainey were connected.

Gwen was working on a project exploring ways to restore dead tissue, which sparked Petersen and Lucy to wonder if it could be used to resurrect the deceased. At the same time, Lucy’s meeting with a suspicious cult leader coincided with the long-awaited collapse of her aunt’s secret relationship.

The first season of Scarpetta ends with Benton and Kay splitting up. Kay can’t reveal to Benton that she—not Pete—was responsible for the death of the original killer 28 years earlier. While the reason for her lack of trust isn’t fully explained, this secret ultimately leads to the end of their long marriage.

Who Walks In On Kay Killing Officer Riley In Scarpetta’s Ending?

The ending of Scarpetta leaves it a mystery who witnesses Scarpetta’s violent self-defense act against Ryan. Right before this happens, the story shows where each major character is – except for Maggie, whose location remains unknown.

Okay, so as a big fan, I’ve been thinking about who walks in on Kay at the end. It has to be Maggie. After years of working against Kay, she’s suddenly helping her, which is super suspicious. Plus, she just gave Scarpetta a key piece of evidence earlier, so maybe she needed to drop off another clue right at the last minute. It just makes the most sense to me!
