The Next Destiny Game, Codenamed Payback, Has Reportedly Been Cancelled

As a long-time Destiny player, I’ve journeyed through countless Light years, battled countless Hive, Vex, and Cabal, and have grown attached to my Guardian like a second skin. So, hearing about the reported cancellation of Destiny Payback leaves me feeling a bit like Ghost after losing our Guardian for the umpteenth time – disappointed, but determined to press on.

It appears that the upcoming Destiny game, code-named “Payback,” was previously scrapped, leaving us to assume that Sony plans to continue backing Destiny 2 for some time.

As per reports by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Bungie had been developing a spin-off titled Payback. However, this project is said to have been canceled some time ago, with only preliminary work having been completed on it. It’s important to note that there was never any development underway for Destiny 3, as claimed by Schreier.

According to Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb, who spoke on Game Mess Mornings, Bungie referred to Payback as “the successor of Destiny” instead of Destiny 3. However, Payback has been put on hold indefinitely. To clarify, neither a Destiny 3 nor the next version of Destiny is something that Bungie is currently planning or actively working on.

Furthermore, it’s said that Bungie is dedicated to continuing Destiny 2, but future content releases will be noticeably smaller than the major expansions the game has previously had, such as The Final Shape. It appears that Bungie now refers to these smaller updates as “content packs” within their organization.

Yesterday, Bungie let go of over 200 employees, while some were reallocated to internal roles within their new parent company, Sony, and others were tasked with establishing a fresh studio to develop a new action game. As reported by Grubb, Bungie is said to be maintaining its plan for the release of Marathon, its extraction shooter, by 2025.
