As a design enthusiast with a deep admiration for both Disney and Canva, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by this unique collaboration. The fusion of these two giants is not just a business move, but a testament to the power of creativity and self-expression.
For a brief period, the online design platform Canva has struck an extraordinary agreement with The Walt Disney Company to temporarily feature 10 iconic characters from Disney’s archives, specifically for use during their bi-annual D23 fan event.
Beginning August 9, Canva’s online design tool platform will offer popular Disney characters such as Sorcerer Mickey, Princess Tiana, the Mandalorian, Joy from “Inside Out”, and Woody from “Toy Story” to its paid subscribers. These Disney-themed graphics will be accessible from August 9 (which coincides with the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, on the same dates) until September 30.
Canva considers Disney characters as an ideal match for its user base, given their affinity with creative individuals who often engage in intricate cosplay or various artistic projects that resonate well with Canva’s design tools.
Beyond this, it’s worth noting that Disney CEO Bob Iger holds an investment and board position within a privately-held Australian company, Canva. Since its debut in 2013, Canva has grown into a digital media sensation from Down Under, achieving a staggering valuation of $40 billion by September 2021. Currently, the platform boasts an impressive user base of approximately 190 million people worldwide, with 17 million subscribers opting for its premium services. Additionally, it caters to 70 million Canva for Education users in schools and around 500,000 nonprofit organizations, who enjoy complimentary access to the platform’s tools.
As the global head of consumer marketing at Canva, I’m thrilled to express that our platform exists to help individuals transform their concepts into stunning visuals, just like Disney does with its groundbreaking visual storytelling. Both Canva and Disney are united in our dedication to enchanting our audiences and fostering self-expression. We feel privileged to collaborate, aiming to spark even more creativity among Disney enthusiasts and beyond.
Canva’s 11-year history has seen no larger branded-content licensing agreement than the one with Disney. At Disney’s D23 event coming up this month, Canva will showcase its presence through a “Canva Magic Print Shop” design installation. This setup will enable attendees to experiment with Canva’s design tools by creating customized tote bags, thank-you cards, photo collages, and other D23 memorabilia.
“Silvia Oviedo, the head of content and discovery at Canva, stated that Canva aims to provide all design tools for your creative ideas directly within reach. This development in our content library signifies an exhilarating progression as we introduce branded content to stimulate creativity and bring joy to our audience.”
On May 23, Canva hosted an exclusive event, “Canva Creates,” at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, attracting both established corporations and prominent figures from the Hollywood creative scene. This design tool provider, renowned for its user-friendly approach, is currently expanding its clientele by targeting larger corporate entities and influential personalities in the film industry.
