As a passionate cinephile with a penchant for all things Italian cinema, I am thrilled to witness the rise of Carolina Cavalli, an emerging talent whose unique voice is poised to captivate audiences worldwide. The upcoming project, “The Kidnapping of Arabella,” promises to be another masterpiece following the success of “Amanda.”
Under the guidance of newly appointed CEO Annamaria Morelli, The Apartment (Fremantle’s in-house production company) is gearing up to create the upcoming work by budding Italian director Carolina Cavalli. This project will be one of three exciting titles they plan to showcase at Venice, including Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer”.
Director Luca Guadagnino, known for his debut film “Amanda” which screened at Venice and Toronto, is preparing to film a new project called “The Kidnapping of Arabella.” This upcoming movie will once again feature Benedetta Porcaroli, who played the main character in “Amanda,” as the leading actress.
Just like “Amanda,” an absurdist comedy from Arrested Development, “The Kidnapping of Arabella” follows a similar path, earning wide acclaim and critical recognition. In this film, Porcaroli portrays Holly, a young woman who feels like a misfit. She believes she’s the wrong version of herself until she encounters a 7-year-old girl that challenges her perspective, as suggested by the movie’s synopsis.
“Observing solitary souls uniting to tackle an issue, I find great joy, for it seems they’ve conquered their loneliest struggle first – and that’s what resonates deeply within me.” (Said in a statement to EbMaster)
The author, known for penning “The Kidnapping of Arabella” script, expressed eagerness and gratitude, saying, “I’m eager to get started and I’m truly thankful for this chance.”
The Iranian creative professional, Babak Jalali, known for his collaborations with Cavalli and former editor of “Amanda,” has been appointed as the editor for the project titled “Kidnapping of Arabella.”
Filming for “The Kidnapping of Arabella” will commence on August 21 in Italy’s northern Veneto region. This film is being jointly produced by Elsinore Film and The Apartment, with the latter now under the ownership of Morelli, following the departure of Lorenzo Mieli earlier this year from his founder position.
“Carolina’s second film fits perfectly with my plans for The Apartment in the future,” Morelli stated during her initial interview since taking over as company leader. “On one hand, I plan to maintain our established path, which includes producing high-quality films featuring Italy’s top talents like Paolo Sorrentino and Luca Guadagnino, while also pursuing large international co-productions and premier international intellectual properties.”
Morelli, who has built her career on nurturing fresh filmmaking talent, also emphasized the importance of cultivating a new wave of Italian directors and artists. She doesn’t just mean creating a handful of films; it’s about discovering these gifted individuals, fostering their growth, and helping them achieve recognition both domestically and globally, thereby increasing their influence.
Morelli expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead The Apartment, as it will debut alongside Pablo Larrain’s “Maria” featuring Angelina Jolie at Venice, as well as the series “M. Son of the Century” and the drama “Without Blood,” directed by Angelina Jolie and starring Salma Hayek, which is premiering in Toronto. Additionally, Paolo Sorrentino’s “Parthenope,” which has been sold worldwide, will soon hit cinemas after its premiere at Cannes.
I’m thrilled to be part of the dynamic team at Fremantle, a robust subsidiary of the global media titan RTL Group. Under the visionary leadership of COO Andrea Scrosati, we’ve successfully gathered a stellar group of independently operated top-tier indies from around the world. This includes Element Pictures from Ireland (“Poor Things”), Dancing Ledge from the U.K. (“The Responder”), and Miso Film from Denmark (“The Investigation”).
She mentioned that Andrea has a far-reaching perspective, explaining that while profit matters, it’s not always an immediate requirement. She expressed her excitement about working alongside renowned Italian and global filmmakers over the long haul, contributing to the creation of enduring works.
As a film enthusiast, I’m excited to share that Morelli has expressed interest in collaborating with Italy’s Indigo Film on co-productions. Currently, we are jointly producing “Fuori,” a biopic of the renowned feminist writer Goliarda Sapienza, directed by the veteran auteur Mario Martone. This captivating project stars Valeria Golino and Matilda De Angelis, who recently starred in “Citadel: Diana.” The film is based on the life of Sapienza, best recognized for her posthumously published erotic novel “The Art of Joy.”
