As a film enthusiast, I am simply awestruck by the incredible journey of Natalia Cabral, a director whose talent and tenacity have taken her from small-scale short films to major international productions. Her latest endeavor, “My Uncle’s Movie,” is a testament to her versatility as a storyteller and her deep understanding of the film industry.
Demonstrating the interconnectedness of the worldwide film industry, Cornelius Films, based in Barcelona and known for productions like “Negu Herbilak” set in the Basque Country and the upcoming stop-motion feature “Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake,” has taken on “My Uncle’s Movie,” a Dominican Republic production featuring Steve Bauer from “Better Call Saul.”
Currently in pre-production and scheduled to film in 2024, “My Uncle’s Movie” (“La Película de Mi Tío”) serves as the next project following the successful fiction feature debut of Dominican Natalia Cabral and Catalan Oriol Estrada, titled “Miriam Lies” (2018) and “A Film About Couples” (2021), which won numerous awards. This film marks Cabral’s first solo directing endeavor since her 2005 short film “DiscoDecada,” without the collaboration of Estrada.
“The movie titled ‘My Uncle’s Movie’ will be unveiled in mid-August at Locarno’s networking initiative Match Me! It was initially announced as a production of Faula Films, the label co-founded by Estrada and Cabral, which operates between the Dominican Republic and Barcelona. The filming will take place at Lantica Studios, a large facility whose owner, Lantica Media, has recently become its sole proprietor and is currently constructing a fourth soundstage. ‘My Uncle’s Movie’ is also being produced by independent production houses Casa Latina Films, led by Gregorio Rodríguez, and Cornelius Films.”
In their work titled “My Uncle’s Movie,” it is Cabral who takes the helm as director for her first solo directorial project. (This version aims to maintain the original meaning while providing a more natural and easy-to-read rephrasing.)
In the film titled “My Uncle’s Movie,” we see Maia Otero making her screen debut, accompanied by the experienced actor Bauer. Known for his roles as Manolo “Manny” Ribera in “Scarface” and Don Eladio Vuente in both “Breaking Bad” (2011) and “Better Call Saul” (2017–2022), Bauer brings a rich background to the production.
The main cast additionally features Felix German, a versatile figure who has worn the hats of writer, director, and actor, and gained recognition with his award-winning role in “The Projectionist” by Jose Maria Cabral. In this movie, he portrays the title character’s uncle.
In addition, Hemkyu Madera (known for “Dreaming of Julia,” “The Lost City”), and Eduardo Ceballos, a co-producer on “Hands of Stone,” are also part of the cast.
The movie titled “A Couple’s Film” features Cabral and Estrada portraying a filmmaking team assigned to create a documentary on relationships. Simultaneously, the narrative within the film shows their own tumultuous relationship as they embark on this project.
Similarly, using Lantica Studios, “My Uncle’s Movie” is a comedy that seems to capitalize on Cabral and Estrada’s extensive understanding of a world they are familiar with: Film productions. However, their own low-budget film in “My Uncle’s Movie” is quite different from the one filmed in the movie.
In this scenario, a long-lost niece meets her uncle, who’s now a movie producer, in one of his action films. However, as past hurts reemerge, the necessary financing for the project fails to materialize, causing the production to shut down. Nevertheless, they eventually understand that repairing their relationship offers them both a chance to progress and find purpose amidst a lifetime of setbacks, as the story concludes.

It offers a critique of the country’s social and economic conditions using vibrant, humorous satire,” said Carlota Darnell, who will promote ‘My Uncle’s Movie’ at Match Me!.
In my perspective, ‘My Uncle’s Movie’ brings together the skillset and background of esteemed Dominican director, scriptwriter, and producer Natalia Cabral and her team based in the Dominican Republic. This collaboration is enhanced by Cornelius Films, a Spanish company renowned for its expertise in international co-productions, having worked with nations like France, Belgium, Chile, and Mexico. The cast is a unique blend of rising Dominican talents, such as Maia Otero, and an internationally acclaimed star, Steven Bauer. As Darnell pointed out, these diverse elements give ‘My Uncle’s Movie’ a wide-reaching potential on the international stage.
As a cinephile, I’m associated with various film production houses. For Faula Films, it’s Estrada and Cabral who take the lead. Casa Latina Films is under Rodríguez’s guidance. Lantica Studios has Rafael Elías Muñoz and Jordi Gassó on board, while Mikel Mas is the key figure at Cornelius Films.
