As a film enthusiast with a keen interest in international collaborations, I find the establishment of Akanga Film Asia as the Spanish Audiovisual Hub in Asia to be an incredibly exciting development! With Fran Borgia at the helm, boasting an impressive portfolio of Asian film production credits, it’s evident that this partnership will undoubtedly foster a deeper connection between the audiovisual industries of Spain and Asia.
The Singapore-based film production company, Akanga Film Asia, is now officially the new Asian base for the Spanish Audiovisual Hub. Their goal is to foster stronger links between the Spanish sectors of film, television, animation, and gaming with their counterparts in Asia.
Akanga is led by Fran Borgia, a Spanish producer who has worked on Asian films such as “Apprentice” by Boo Junfeng, the Locarno-winning “A Land Imagined” by Yeo Siew Hua, “Yuni” by Kamila Andini, and “Tiger Stripes” by Amanda Nell Eu.
The company was chosen following a tender organized by the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in Singapore, which stands for ICEX Spain Export and Investment. Borgia has been designated as the “Specialist in the Spanish Audiovisual Sector for Asia” and will collaborate closely with seasoned producer and festival advisor Lorna Tee.
“The goal of this project is to boost Spain’s reputation as a production hub for films and as a location for filming, editing, and investing in the visual effects industry. Receiving this contract is an important step towards showcasing Spanish culture in Asia.” – ICEX stated.
“Borgia, a Spaniard who’s resided in Asia for more than two decades, expressed his view on the immense potential for partnership between Spanish and Asian media sectors. He shared his enthusiasm about our efforts to foster these connections, working alongside an outstanding group of collaborators,” said Borgia.
The center plans to participate in several film markets and festivals for the rest of the year. Some of these events are: the Venice Film Festival, Busan’s ACFM, Tokyo’s TIFFCOM, Taiwan Creative Content Fest, Film Bazaar in Goa, India, Indonesia’s JAFF, and the Asian Television Forum & Market in Singapore.
A person, with a unique cultural background straddling both Asia and Europe and having served as a top executive at EbMaster, has recently been a producer for the Cannes film “Viet & Nam.” She currently holds the position of Secretary General for the Asian Film Alliance Network (AFAN), an organization comprising seven film agencies across Asia. This network is dedicated to promoting better comprehension and strengthening cooperation within the Asian film industry.
