As a movie critic with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for underdog stories, I am positively ecstatic about the upcoming seasons of “Squid Game.” Having grown up watching Korean dramas that often struggled to find global recognition, it’s heartening to see a series like this break barriers and capture the world’s imagination.
The eagerly awaited second season of “Squid Game” on Netflix now has an official release date, while it was additionally confirmed that this popular South Korean series will continue for a thrilling third and concluding installment.
Season 2 is scheduled for release on December 26, and we’re looking forward to the start of Season 3 in 2025. The dates and details about the final season were revealed in a video that you can watch here.
Apart from that, the series mastermind, Hwang Dong-hyuk, shared a message with fans expressing his joy as he saw the concept he developed for a fresh Squid Game take root and flourish to its final narrative conclusion.
The full letter can also be seen below.
Previously stated was the exciting news that Lee Jung-jae will rejoin his fellow cast members Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo for another project. Additionally, we have some new faces joining the team: Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.
The official description for Season 2 states:
“Three years following his victory at Squid Game, Player 456 continues his relentless pursuit of those responsible for the sinister contest, utilizing his newfound wealth to finance his investigation. Initially searching in the most apparent locations, Gi-hun begins by seeking out the man in a tailored suit playing ddakji on the subway. However, upon gaining some leads, he discovers that dismantling the organization is more perilous than expected: if he wishes to eradicate the game, he must again risk his life and participate.”
In addition to Kim Ji-yeon, Hwang is also the executive producer of “Squid Game”. The production company responsible for this Netflix series is Firstman Studio.
In the first season of “Squid Game,” it holds the record as Netflix’s most-viewed TV series ever. The program garnered 14 Emmy nominations, winning six awards. Among these victories were Hwang receiving the award for best director in a drama series, Lee taking home the trophy for best actor in a drama series, and Lee You-mi being recognized as best guest actress in a drama.
